Method for influencing the consumption of fluid, giving information and/or operating of apparatus.
The invention relates to a method for influencing the consumption of fluid supplied by a central supplier at the location of the consumers of said fluid.
It has been known for several decades already to turn apparatuses which consume a great deal of energy, such as water heaters, on and/or off at the consumers' location at certain points in time by means of signals sent via the electricity network.
Equipment for sending and processing signals via the electricity network by means of audio-frequency systems is generally known per se, therefore.
On the other hand there has been a long-felt need to use other available resources as economically as possible, both for financial reasons and for environmental reasons.
According to a first aspect of the invention signals are supplied from a central location, via an electricity network, to control units by means of which apparatus which influences the consumption of the fluid can be adjusted at the consumer's location.
The invention makes it possible to influence the consumption of fluid, such as gas and water, from a central location, for example in order to smooth peaks in the consumption and/or attempt to influence and/or regulate the consumption at the consumers' location. There are several possibilities as regards the influencing of the consumption of gas.
Thus it is for example possible to influence a thermostat of a heating system of a building by supplying signals, via the electricity network, to (a) control unit(s) of an apparatus connected to said thermostat. Said thermostat may be a thermostat which responds to the temperature in a particular room, and/or a thermostat which responds to the water temperature in the heating system. It is for example possible to effect by remote control thereby that a different temperature is set for the thermostat in question and/or that the gas burner of the heating system is only turned on or off at a temperature deviating from the temperature set on the thermostat by the user and/or at the works.
Another possibility for controlling the consumption of gas is to control the gas supply to the burner of the heating system by means of a suitable control valve, which is to be actuated via (an) electrically controlled control unit(s) , in order to 1 i it the consumption of the gas for heating purposes at the consumer's location, for example in case of a large increase in the consumption of gas. In that case the control valve can be set again via a control unit, to which control signals can be supplied via the electricity network.
Furthermore it is conceivable to control the rotational speed of the pump of the heating system, which is generally electrically driven, by means of an apparatus connected to the pump, which can be operated by means of one or control units to be activated by means of signals transmitted via the electricity network.
In this manner the heating of for example rooms and/or water or the like can be influenced individually for every consumer or group of consumers from a central location via the electricity network. This is useful not only for smoothing peaks in the gas consumption, for example, but also for turning installations of certain consumers on and/or off at desired points in time, or for switching from one operating mode to another. In this connection the central switching of heating systems from day operation to night operation or from weekday operation to weekend operation may be considered.
All this may also be implemented with district heating systems, whereby the heating can be influenced individually for each house and/or establishment, for example, by controlling pumps, in order to make the best possible use of the heating energy, which is supplied in the form of gas or the like.
Of course also other gas-consuming installations besides heating systems can be influenced in the above-described manner, by means of apparatuses which can be controlled by means of control units which are to be activated by means of signals to be supplied via the electricity network.
Besides the influencing of the consumption of gas by supplying signals, via the electricity network, to control units of apparatus influencing the flow of the gas, also a tariff scheme may be considered in this connection, whereby the gas meter can be changed over to a different tariff by means of signals supplied via the electricity
network, and the change over from one tariff to another can be made known at the consumer's location by means of an indicating element, which is likewise operated by means of a control unit which is to be activated by signals supplied via the electricity network. This makes it possible to influence the consumer's behaviour and thus his gas consumption.
Not only the consumption of fluid in the form of gas, but also the consumption of fluid in the form of water can be influenced by using the method according to the invention. Think in this connection of a mains cock incorporated in a water conduit, for example, by means of which the supply of water can be completely shut off or opened, as the case may be, by operating the mains cock by means of an apparatus which can be controlled by (a) control unit(s), which are activated by signals supplied via the electricity network. This may be of importance for example in the case of overdue payments and/or a change of consumer and the like. Another possibility in this field is the regulation of the operation of certain water systems. Think in this connection of irrigation plants, for example, which are used for the water supply in particular in the agricultural sector, such as sprinkling plants and the like. Such plants may be centrally operated by implementing the method according to the invention, and be turned on and/or off at desired points in time, for example, depending on the weather conditions, by supplying signals, via the electricity network, to control units of apparatus controlling such plants.
The method according to the invention furthermore makes it possible to set different tariffs for the consumption of water, wherein the tariff meter can be changed over from one tariff to another by sending signals, via the electricity network, to control units of an apparatus which influences the tariff meter, whilst said action can simultaneously be made known to the consumer with a view to influencing his consumption pattern.
It will be apparent that the utilization in accordance with the invention of the already existing electricity network makes it possible to influence and/or centrally regulate the consumption of fluid, such as gas or water, at the consumer's location with a view to optimizing the consumption of said relatively scarce media. It is possible to use apparatus already known per se for the regulation of the consumption of electricity.
The possibility of sending signals via the electricity network may also be used in other manners, whether or not in combination with the above-described methods, for example for supplying services to the consumers of electric power. Thus a second aspect of the invention relates to a method for giving information to consumers of electric power who are connected to an electricity network. According to the invention this is effected in that signals are supplied, via the electricity network, to a control unit of a display screen disposed at the location of a customer or customers so as to display information thereon.
By using the method according to the invention the consumer can be provided in a simple manner with information which may be important to him, for example information about the power and/or gas tariff, information about the weather, and/or traffic information. Furthermore it is possible to give information about the gas or water consumption at the consumer's location, for example. It is also possible to display information of a general nature, or commercial information. The system is also particularly suitable for raising the alarm in case of air pollution, slippery road conditions, holdups and fire. It is possible thereby to cause an acoustic signal to be activated with certain alarm messages, if desired.
All this can be realised in a particularly simple and efficient manner if the display of a thermostat of a heating system, which usually displays information on the settings of the heating system and/or the room temperature, is used as the display screen.
A third aspect of the invention relates to a method for controlling apparatuses of consumers" of electric power who are connected to the electricity network. Also here it is possible to make efficient use of the possibility to send signals via the electricity network, in that in accordance with the invention signals are supplied, via the electricity network, to control units of drive units which influence said apparatuses, so as to operate said drive units for a desired period of time.
Thus it is possible thereby to operate motors for opening and/or closing curtains, sunshades and the like at the location of one or more customers at desired points in time. Furthermore the putting into operation at desired points in time and for desired periods of time
of pumps forming part of a water transport system may be considered. Another possibility is for example the turning on and off of apparatuses associated with ventilation systems, e.g. fan motors and the like. This may for example be of importance in the event of considerable air pollution occurring, since it will be possible then to turn off the ventilation system of buildings in selected areas from a central location. Furthermore it is possible thereby, if desired, to couple the influencing of a drive unit to the generation of an acoustic and/or visual signal, so that the consumer will be made aware of said influencing of the drive unit in question.
