The invention is related to a method and device for observation of the TV audience behaviour in observation points distributed according to socio-demographic characteristics.
STATE OF THE ART
A method for observation of the TV audience behaviour (1) is known, which consists in observation of distributed points (TV sets) in a definite built-up area (for example, subscribers' houses) which are covered by a specialized computer system. The TV program watched at the moment is identified in selected observation points determined according to socio-demographic characteristics of the TV viewers by means of method which is representative for the observed totality of the area. The moment (year, month, date, hour, minute) is memorized, TV program watched in each point is registered. The data from separate points are collected and generalized. The data are processed according to the method with respective representativeness for different levels and the analysis shows which TV program was watched on a fixed time. The analysis is realizedby means of a computer system. Besides, the TV viewers are enabled to estimate the quality of the respective watched program, and even the persons taking part in it, while the estimations are registered and stored in the respective device. At request an interview is loaded from the master computer through telephone modems (or radio modems) into each data recorder, and when the specified event (switching-on the TV set, hour, date, etc.) occurs,
the interview is started in the form of running text on the display of the device. Members of each household may answer the questions by means of the remote control unit serving for a dialogue of TV viewers with the data recorder. The viewer may answer with "yes", "no" or a mark according to a six-point marking system. Besides, it is possible to return to the previous question or to pass to the next one.
TV programs may be identified with high precision through a complex video signal from the TV set which is decomposed into a number of lines and impulses in them, and the analysis of the number of impulses contained in the definite line and comparing them with pre-set tables in the memory leads to identification of definite TV program.
A device for observation of the TV audience behaviour is known, which consists of two buffer attenuators connected respectively with the TV set and/or video recorder varicap voltage in the house of the user. Digital inputs INI . , . IN16 are connected to the TV set and video unit, as well as to presence sensor PS. Varicap voltages, after passing through buffer attenuators, are connected to analogue-to-digital converter ADC, The device is provided with two microcontroller units MCUl and MCU2. Multiplexer AMUX and ADC are connected to the first microcontroller unit MCUl. By means of input-output logic digital inputs are connected to the microcontroller unit MCUl. By means of the same lo-=- gic the microcontroller unit is connected to a modem, which, in its turn, is connected my means of an interface circuit to a serial interface RS232. Through a serial peripheral interface SPI a real time clock RTC is connected to the first microcontroller unit MCUl . Permanent memory EPROM and random access memory RAM are connected to MCUl by means of control logic MCULOGIC. Power to the
random access memory and the clock RTC is buffered by means of storage battery. A remote control receiver is connected to the first microcontroller unit. The entire system is provided with common power supply from the mains. Microcontroller MCUl is also connected to interface circuit for serial interface RS232. The second microcontroller unit is connected to the first microcontroller unit MCUl by means of serial peripheral interface SPI. The second microcontroller unit is also connected to the permanent memory EPROM and by means of indication logic INDLOGIC it controls the display /INDICATION/ of the system (2) .
TECHNICAL ESSENCE AND ADVANTAGES
The essence of the offered method for observation of the TV audience behaviour consists in observation of distributed points (TV sets) in a definite built-up area (for example, subscribers' houses) which are covered by a specialized computer system. The currently watched TV program is identified in selected observation points determined according to socio-demographic characteristics of the TV viewers by means of method which is representative for the observed totality of the area. The moment (year, month, date, hour, minute) is stored. TV program watched in each point is registered. The data from separate points are collected and generalized. The data are processed according to the method with the respective representativeness for different levels and the analysis shows which TV program was watched on a fixed time. The analysis is realized by means of a computer system. Besides, the TV viewers are enabled to estimate the quality of the respective watched program and even the persons taking part in it, while the estimations are registered and stored in the corresponding device.
At request an interview is loaded from the master computer through telephone modems (or radio modems) into each data recorder, and when the specified event (switching on the TV set, hour, date, etc.) occurs, the interview is started in the form of the running text on the display of the device. Members of each household may answer the questions by means of the remote control unit serving for a dialogue of the TV viewers with the data recorder. The viewer may answer with "yes", "no" or a mark according to a six-point marking system. Besides, it is possible to return to the previous question or to pass to the next one.
On a fixed time in the user's house a signal is taken from the watched TV channel and this signal is processed in order to read the lines and scenes (which are coded by numbers, for example) . The video signals are analysed by videoprocessor (or analogue-to-digital converter) . The obtained information on the location of the official codes in video signals (transmitted by the TV head office) comes to the microprocessor which puts additional official information to some of the reserved places in the coming from the TV head office TV signal. The latter information is mixed with high frequency step by step, with the interval of one TV channel. When the frequency coincides with that of the watched channel, the official information is mixed with the TV antenna signal. In this way on the TV video-output the signal contains also the official information which is analysed by videoprocessor and is read by microprocessor. The operator tells the microprocessor that when it transmits frequency equal to this TV channel plus the official information - that is the definite TV channel. In this way every switching over of a TV channel will be identified by the processor through the official information, and the channel number will be recognized through it. The combination of this
frequency and this information makes it possible to recognize precisely the watched channel.
The essence of the offered invention also consists in a device realising part of the above-described method, in particular the part referring to registration of definite TV programs in separate households. The device includes microcontroller connected to memory, a modem, real-time clock, display, remote control unit, TV signal processor, frquency synthesizer connected to voltage- controled oscillator VCO. Besides, the microcontroller is connected to mixer which is linked to the aerial mixer of the antenna input of the TV set. TV sienal processor is connected to the output for recording in the TV videorecorder .
The advantages of the offered method consist in the fact that it is not necessary to open the TV set in order to install the device. This makes the installation easier and it can be fulfilled by a specialist having lower qualification. The device can be made to memorize TV channels just at the place of production, and not at the user's place. Recognition of the channel does not depend on local conditions (variation in the supply or varicap voltage) . The speed of recognition of channels is higher than with the device mentioned in the previous chapter.
EXAMPLES FOR REALISATION OF THE INVENTION
Fig. 1 gives a schematic view of a model realisation of the offered device, carrying out that part of the method which refers to registration of definite TV programs in separate households .
The device (Fig. 1) consists of a microprocessor unit MPU connected to a MODEM, reals time clock RTC, display INDIKATION,
block for remote control BD, block for TV signal processing TVSP, synthesizer (consisting of frequency synthesizer SYNT connected to voltage-controled oscillator VCO) , mixer MIX connected, in its turn, to the aerial mixer SUM of the antenna input of the TV set, and TVSP block is also connected to the output for recording VIDEO of the TV videorecorder . TVSP block may include a videoprocessor. TVSP may have a buffer video memory, too. Microprosessor MPU has a buffer video memory.
The device operates as follows: The signal from the TV set comes into the TV signal processing block TVSP, where lines and scenes are separated {the lace of a line and a scene becomes clear, as well as the information contained in them) . TVSP sends to the microprocessor unit MPU information how a line and a scene could be found. The signal taken from the watched channel, after it is analysed in TVSP, obtains additional official information from MPU, Microprocessor MPU adds this additional official information to some reserved places in the TV signal. This additional information is transmitted to the mixer MIX. On the other side the above-mentioned mixer receives high frequency from the voltage-controled oscillator VCO. This high frequency is changes step by step by means of synche ii.cv SYNT, controled by microprocessor unit MPU. When the frequency coincides with that of the watched TV channel, the official information transmitted to the summarizer SUM is mixed with the TV antenna signal. In this way on the TV video-output the signal contains also the official information which is analysed by TVSP block and is read by the microprocessor unit MPU. The operator tells the microprocessor unit MPU that when it transmits frequency equal to that of the TV channel plus the official information - that is the definite TV channel. By means of changing the high
frequency by the voltage-controled oscillator VCO , the official information from the microprocessor unit is added automatically .
The combination of this frequency and this information makes it poss ible to recognise precisely the watched channel .
