Abstract

A system for controlling apparatus processing a signal representing a television program comprises a source of schedule data comprising at least data (16) representing the time remaining in a television program. Television signal processing apparatus selectively processes the television program representative signal in response to a control signal. A control circuit (39) generates the control signal to condition the processing apparatus to begin processing the television program signal in response to a user control signal, and to stop processing the television program signal when the time remaining in the television program has elapsed, in response to the program schedule data.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 27 June 1998 (27.06.98); original claims 1-3, 6, 12 and 13 amended; original claim 14 cancelled; remaining claims unchanged (4 pages)]
1 . A control system, comprising: a signal source (31) for providing a sequence of video program signals and program schedule data comprising data representing the duration time of each of the video program signals; a signal processing apparatus (35) coupled to the signal source; and a control circuit (39), responsive to a sequence of entries of a user command
(USER CONTROL) for causing the signal processing apparatus to begin processing a video program signal currently being provided by the signal source and a selected number of video program signals that follow the currently provided video program signal, the selected number determined in response to the number of entries of the user command in the sequence of entries, determining the time remaining until the end of each of the video program signals being processed, and causing the signal processing apparatus to stop processing the video program signal being processed when the time remaining until the end of the video program signal being processed has elapsed.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit comprises : a time remaining calculator (391), coupled to the signal source (31), for determining the time remaining in a video program signal; 16
an elapsed time counter (392) responsive to the time remaining calculator, for generating a signal when the time remaining in the selected video program signal has elapsed; and a logic element (393), responsive to the subsequent entries of the user command for causing the signal processing apparatus^ to begin processing, and responsive to the signal from the elapsed time counter for causing the signal processing apparatus to stop processing a subsequent video program signal.
3. The system of claim 1, wherein the signal source comprises a terrestrial television receiver
(31) front end having a television signal separator (33) for providing a composite television signal; and an extended data service signal separator (37) for providing an extended data service component containing the program schedule data.
4. The system of claim 3, wherein the composite television signal includes a vertical blanking interval, and the extended data service signal is contained in the vertical blanking interval of the composite television signal.
5. The system of claim 3, wherein the composite television signal includes a horizontal overseen interval, and the extended data service signal is contained in the horizontal overseen interval of the composite television signal. 17
6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal source comprises a satellite packet stream receiver (31 ') having a first packet separator (33') responsive to a first plurality of packets representing the sequence of video program signals; and a second packet separator (37') responsive to a second plurality of packets representing the program schedule data.
7. The system of claim 6 wherein the signal processing apparatus is a digital recorder (35), and records the first plurality of packets.
8. The system of claim 1 wherein the signal processing apparatus is an analog television signal recorder (35).
9. The system of claim 1 wherein the signal processing apparatus is a sleep timer.
10. The system of claim 1 wherein the signal processing apparatus implements a television program lock-out function.
1 1 . The system of claim 1 wherein the control circuit is comprised in a processor.
12. The system of claim 1, wherein the sequence of entries of the user commands are made using a pushbutton switch. 18
13. A method for controlling a signal processing apparatus, coupled to a signal source adapted to provide a sequence of video program signals and program schedule comprising data representing time duration information for each of the video programs, the method comprising the steps of: responding to a sequence of entries of a user command by: conditioning the signal processing apparatus to begin processing a video program signal representing a current television program; conditioning the signal processing apparatus to process a selected number of video program signals that follow the video program signal representing the current television program, the selected number being determined by the number of entries of the user command in the sequence of entries; extracting the time duration information for each of the selected video program signals; and causing the signal processing apparatus to stop processing the respective video program signal when the time duration of the selected video program signal has elapsed.
