Abstract

Non-plugging contact surfaces (7) are arranged at the surface of a new type of portable data carriers (3). The contact surfaces (7) establish a galvanic contact with adjacent data carriers (3) and at the same time with a bus system when several data carriers (3) of the same type are stacked. A substantially square-shaped adapter (1) has a PCMCIA standardised connection (8) that can be plugged into the equipment terminal strip and at least one cavity (2) for receiving at least one stackable data carrier (3). Mating contact surfaces (6) arranged in the receiving cavity (2) contact the contact surfaces (7) of a data carrier (3) placed in the cavity.

Beschreibungdescription
Schnittstellen-Adapter zur Verbindung einer PCMCIA-Anschlu߬ leiste mit Kontaktflächen eines stapelbaren, kartenförmigen DatenträgersInterface adapter for connecting a PCMCIA connector strip with contact surfaces of a stackable, card-shaped data carrier
The invention relates to an interface adapter for connecting a connector strip standardized to the PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) standard, which contains pluggable contacts, with at least one stackable, card-shaped data carrier, on the surfaces of which are non-pluggable Contact areas are arranged.
The previous data carriers, generally referred to as chip cards, with standardized dimensions generally contain semiconductor memory elements with a relatively small memory capacity and a logic circuit which is in the foreground. With the increasing availability of inexpensive semiconductor memories that have a storage capacity in the megabit range or far above, there is a desire to be able to access a large number of similar data carriers of the largest possible storage capacity quickly and easily. These data carriers are to be made available, for example, for digitized music signals, software for data processing systems, etc. The semiconductor memories can be writable and erasable memories or just read memories (ROM). The data are preferably stored in compressed form with regard to their redundancy.
So far, so-called memory cards have become known, which serve primarily as additional storage for information in personal computers and are to be regarded as simple memory cards with parallel access that can be connected to the PC. The memory cards have non-volatile or battery-powered semiconductor memories. In order for the memory contents to be accessed quickly, many parallel data lines must be made available. A special plug connector was developed for the use of the memory cards and standardized according to the PCMCIA, whereby data from the JEIDA (Japan Electronic Industry Development Association) were also used. This connector is generally known under the abbreviation "PCMCIA connector" and currently contains 68 pin connections on the device side or 68 sockets on the card side. The mechanical implementation usually takes place in such a way that one to three guide rails for different card thicknesses and also an ejection mechanism for the memory cards are provided in the PC housing. A PCMCIA-compatible interface system for the usual memory cards is described, for example, in US Pat. No. 5,334,046.
The conventional data carrier arrangements, in particular the memory cards, are only of limited suitability for storing larger amounts of data. If a processing device is to access several PCMCIA cards, either a card change must be carried out or, if several cards remain inserted at the same time, there must be a corresponding connection socket in the processing device for each card. These connection devices require a relatively large volume.
In order to be able to simultaneously connect a large number of data carriers of the same type to a processing device without complex additional aids, in the older German application No. P 44 35 122.4 a stackable data carrier without its own plug contacts is proposed, in which the contact surfaces are preferably flush with one of the Edge surfaces of the carrier element should be arranged all around. As a result, when data carriers of the same type are placed one on top of the other, galvanic contact with the adjacent data carriers and simultaneously with a bus system is possible.
The object of the present invention is to create the conditions for the novel, stackable data Carriers, which themselves do not contain any pluggable contacts, can be connected to these processing devices via an interface which is already present on commercially available data processing devices, here the PCMCIA connecting bar.

Es zeigen:Further embodiments of the invention are the subject of the subclaims. The invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of exemplary embodiments of an interface adapter in connection with figures. Show it:
Figur 1 eine perspektivische Aufsicht auf einen erfindungs- gemäßen Adapter, Figur 2 in gleicher Darstellung eine bekannte PCMCIA-An¬ schlußleiste mit Stiften.FIG. 1 shows a perspective top view of an adapter according to the invention, Figure 2 in the same representation a known PCMCIA connection strip with pins.
Insbesondere bei einer 12 mm- Adapter-Version können deshalb ohne weiteres auf beiden1 shows a cuboid adapter 1 with a receiving space 2 that is open toward the top. In terms of area, the adapter 1 corresponds approximately to the usual credit card size, while its thickness, in accordance with the PCMCIA standard, can be 3, 6 or 12 mm. With a 12 mm adapter version in particular, you can therefore easily use both
Main surfaces of the adapter are each provided at least one receiving space 2 open to this main surface. In the special embodiment of adapter 1 and data carrier 3 shown in FIG. 1, three data carriers 3 can be inserted next to one another in the receiving space 2. The number of data carriers 3 that can be inserted into the adapter 1 essentially depends on their size. Since the memory chip itself only takes up an area of approximately 1 cm, data carrier sizes down to approximately 1/8 of the credit card format can be realized.
It is advantageous to provide means on the adapter 1 and on the data carriers 3, for example the lugs 4 or grooves 5 shown in FIG. 1, which ensure that the data carriers 3 are inserted in the correct position in the adapter 1. Troughs can also be incorporated in the data carriers 3, for example, which facilitate manual intervention from the outside and thus the removal of the data carrier 3 from the adapter 1.
In FIG. 1 there are also indicated on the bottom surface of the receiving space 2 rows of counter-contact surfaces 6 arranged side by side for the contact surfaces 7 respectively arranged on surfaces of the data carrier 3. The stackable data carriers 3 will typically only have 8 connections. If a plurality of recording spaces 2 or a plurality of spaces for data carriers 3 are provided in a recording space 2, then the associated mating contact surfaces 6 are connected to one another in the adapter, as indicated in FIG. 1. One or more data carriers 3 are inserted into an adapter 1 and contact the mating contact surfaces 6 located there, which end in a 68-pin socket 8 (PCMCIA configuration), the connection counterpart, preferably only 8 passages being used. The data carrier side, for example, 8 contacts are thus connected to 8 or more of the 68 contacts there on the terminal strip side. The adapter 1 thus equipped with data carriers 3 can now be pushed into the corresponding PCMCIA slot of a processing device, which can be constructed, for example, as shown schematically in FIG. 2, it ultimately being used for the plug contact between the device-side connection strip and the connection - counterpart δ of the adapter 1 comes. However, one or more data carriers 3 can also be subsequently pushed into the adapter 1 located in the slot, provided that an opening is provided in the adapter 1 on the edge side. It is also readily possible to arrange at least two data carriers 3 stacked one above the other and serially connected by means of their contact surfaces 7 at a card slot in the receiving space 2.
The adapter concept according to the invention, which initially only ensures an electromechanical adaptation to the PCMCIA configuration, can easily be expanded by means integrated in the adapter for the electronic adaptation of a data access which is organized in parallel on the terminal strip side and is serially organized on the data carrier side. The electrical contacts of the terminal strip correspond, for example, on the PC side to the address and data lines of a microcomputer. If, for example, a special integrated circuit is arranged in the connection counterpart area 9 of the adapter 1 and the socket connections of the connection counterpart 8 are connected upstream, the data carriers 3 inserted into the adapter 1 can be considered as a memory expansion card on the system bus of the microcomputer. In a further embodiment of the invention, not shown in the figures, it is provided that a connector is arranged on an edge of the adapter opposite the connection counterpart 8, to which an external card stack can be connected by means of a connector. This connector can be connected to a card stack arrangement, for example, by means of a cable.
