Abstract
A method for processing or 'inerting' waste from certain medical sources which may contain hazardous germs. An apparatus is provided on-site for storing the waste as soon as it is produced, completely biologically inerting the waste mass by melting it, compacting the waste and conditioning it in an expendable container. The apparatus essentially consists of a vessel (1) into which the waste is fed via a lock (9), a container (4) secured to the bottom of the vessel, a cover (2) for sealing the space therein, a heater (5) for heating the whole assembly, and complementary devices (10-15) for monitoring the atmosphere in said space and processing the gaseous effluents generated during the inerting process.
Description
The object of the present invention is an apparatus for the treatment of waste from certain health professions, and biomedical analysis laboratories.
Cotton waste or compresses used during sampling or handling can be associated with this waste.
Some of them may contain biological or other substances used during sampling and analysis operations: blood, biological cultures, alcohols or solvents. This mass of waste, produced throughout the day of activity, is likely to be contaminated by formidable bacilli or viruses, for example: hepatitis B, AIDS etc.
The danger of contamination remains latent throughout the handling of this waste, until the moment of its destruction.
The apparatus, object of the present invention, is intended to alleviate these dangers by ensuring the double function of: storage of the waste "in situ", in safety, then complete neutralization of the dangers by total destruction of all germs likely to inhabit these waste.
As soon as produced, the waste is introduced into the device, in a receptacle which is the very place of its treatment, which avoids any manipulation during the period of time when the germs can be active.
When the daily load of waste is complete, the treatment process is initiated, and its progress takes place completely automatically; overnight, for example.
A second pole of interest lies in the fact that the "high" temperature treatment of this type of waste has the secondary effect of producing a significant compaction reducing the volume in a ratio of about 8 to 1 for the mixtures of waste considered. upper. The term "inerter" has been assigned to this device in the sense that it transforms a mass of sensitive waste, comprising various substances, into a dense and completely sterile block.
During the treatment, the waste is packaged in a container provided for this purpose, and becomes an ordinary industrial waste, capable of being handled without any danger, which will be eliminated according to traditional processes.
La double fonction d'inertage biologique et de compactage est réalisée par une cuisson, en vase clos, à un niveau de température de l'ordre de 230 à 240 °C.The dual function of biological inerting and compaction is achieved by cooking, in a closed vessel, at a temperature level of the order of 230 to 240 ° C.
, lesquels sont liquéfiés à une telle températureThe waste of the medical professions likely to be treated by this device is mainly composed of so-called "plastic" materials: polyethylenes, polypropylenes, polystyrenes, etc. , which are liquefied at such a temperature
This temperature is maintained for a time long enough to cover the entire waste load. Knowing that no known germ can withstand a temperature above 125 ° C, and this for a short time, biological inerting is therefore completely ensured. During this cooking phase the gaseous effluents emitted by the rise in temperature of waste are treated by traditional devices ensuring: filtration, bacteriological neutralization and deodorization.
A special arrangement for this device allows the treatment tank to be placed under a partial vacuum by means of a pump. The effect of this vacuum is to cause the bubbles of incused gases to swell in the mass of molten waste, and thereby encourage their rise to the surface. A repeated cycling of evacuation, then of return to atmospheric pressure allows the viscous mass of liquefied waste to entrain non-fusible elements, such as, for example: the needles remained on the syringes, the glass tubes of the " collection vacutainer, cottons and compresses. These elements are embedded in the mass which collects in the receptacle container.
The non-fusible hollow bodies are filled with liquefied plastic materials.
