Abstract

The invention concerns a method of transmitting data between computer systems, a value (9) being encoded in accordance with a syntax (8) by a first computer system (2) and transmitted as a data sequence. This data sequence is received by a second computer system (4) and decoded, using the same syntax (13) to give the value (14) again. In the event that the second computer system does not know the syntax (8) of the first computer system (2), this syntax (8) is encoded by the first computer system and transmitted to the second computer system (4). The second computer system receives and decodes the transmitted data sequence and thus obtains the previously unknown syntax (13). This enables a dynamic communications system to be produced which can be adapted to a previously unknown syntax.
