Description

PEDAL BIN WITH LID
The invention relates to a pedal bin with lid comprising a container section- a jacket section hingedly connected to the lid and with which the pedal bin normally stands on the ground, and a lever in the form of a pedal provided near the bottom of the jacket section, on the operation of which the container section is moved upwards while the lid is simultaneously opened round its hinges. Su h a pedal bin is known from the French patent specification 2.453.797.
With this pedal bin according to the French patent specification, the container is moved upwards in respect of the jacket section on the operation of the pedal and in the process pushes the lid up causing it to be opened upwards round its hinges. With the pedal fully pressed, tae lid will hinge over an angle smaller than 90°, so that, when the pedal is released, the lid will automatically close. If the container is to be taken out of the jacket section, the lid must be opened further by hand. After emptying the container and putting it back again in the jacket, the lid must be closed by hand. However, when waste is put in it, the lid is opened by the operation of the pedal less than 90°.
One of the disadvantages of such a pedal bin is the limited opening potential of the lid by the operation of the pedal. This disadvantage is even more serious when both hands are needed for putting waste in the bin, so that there is a fair chance of the inside of the lid getting soiled, which is, moreover, not immediately apparent. This is unhygienic and consequently undesirable.
The object of the invention is to provide a pedal bin as mentioned in the opening paragraph without the said disadvantages.
According to the invention this object is achieved in that the lid hinges over an angle larger than 90o when the pedal is fully pressed and in that means are provided that close the lid when the container section is lowered.
The advantage of such a pedal bin is that, with the pedal fully pressed, the lid is opened over an angle of more than 90° and that both hands are free then for putting waste in the container and, owing to the good visibility, the chance of soiling the inside of the lid is small and can immediately be ascertained, so that the use of the pedal bin is hygienic.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the lid is provided on the hinged side with a lug and the container section is provided near its upper rim with a projection, which projection extends above the lug when the container section is in its highest position.
The effect of this embodiment is that, when lowering the container section by the release of the pedal, the projection strikes against the lug of the lid and thus causes the lid to topple into its closed position.
The projection on the container section may have the form of a lip. A plurality of lugs may be provided on the hinged side of the lid, and on the container section several lips, which extend above the lugs of the lid when the container section is in its highest position.
The lid is connected to the jacket section preferably by means of two hinges. The lips on the container section and the lugs on the lid are preferably provided between the hinges.
In another embodiment according to the invention the container section is provided, on the hinged side of the lid, with one or more lugs resting, with the lid in completely opened position, on the edge of the lid at the hinge and causing the lid to topple into its closed position when the container section is lowered. The jacket section of the pedal bin is provided on the hinged side of the lid with a stop for the opened lid. This stop constitutes the limit to which the lid can be opened beyond 90°.
The lever provided in the jacket section in the form of a pedal is integrated in the bottom of the jacket and the operating portion of the pedal is provided partly in the bottom of the jacket. To this end, at the place where the pedal is provided, the container wall slants inwards.
Other characteristics and advantages will be clear from the description hereinafter, in which reference is made to the attached drawings. Herein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pedal bin with closed lid; a section according to plane II-II in fig. 1; a section as in fig. 2 with the lid partly opened; a section as in fig. 2 with the lid completely opened; a top view of the container section; a top view of another embodiment of the pedal bin with closed lid according to the invention; a section according to plane VII-V I in fig. 6; a section as in fig. 7 with partly opened lid;
Figure imgf000005_0001
a section as in fig. 7 with completely opened lid.
In the figures, 1 serves to indicate a pedal bin comprising a jacket section 2 with an oval or cylindrical shape and a flat back, a lid 3 and, placed in the jacket s..tion, a container 4 with a shape corresponding with that of jacket section 2. In the bottom of jacket section 2, a pedal 5 is provided to operate lid 3. Pedal 5 consists of upper surface, of which portion a is provided under the bottom of the container and a portion b serves to operate the pedal. The flat portion is provided at the bottom with two ribs c and d, the free end of rib c of which is the pivoting point for the pedal. Fig. 3 shows that container rim 7 is situated against a lug 8 provided on the hinged side of lid 3.
Lid 3 is connected with hinges 9 to jacket 2. These hinges may be so-called film hinges. A film hinge is understood to mean a flat strip consisting of two parts interconnected by a thinner portion, round which thinner portion the said parts can bend in respect of each other. Jacket 2 is provided at its top near hinges 9 with a stop 10 for lid 3. Lug 8 on lid 3 is provided with a projection 11. With lid 3 completely opened (see fig. 4), this projection 11 is situated under a lip 12 provided on the outside of container 4. This lip 12 is provided at the top of a V or trapezium-shaped groove 13 of container 4.
In another embodiment according to the invention, shown in figures 6 to 9 inclusive, container 4 is provided on the hinged side of lid 3 with one or more lugs 13. With lid 3 completely opened (see fig. 9), these lugs 13 rest, at hinges 9, on edge 14 of the lid. In this embodiment, too, jacket 2 is provided on the hinged side of lid 3 with a stop 15 for supporting the completely opened lid. In the two embodiments according to the invention pedal 5 is integrated in the bottom of jacket section 2. In the former embodiment (see fig. 1) operating portion b of pedal 5 is provided partly in the bottom of jacket 2. To this end, container 4 has a wall portion 16 at pedal 5 slanting downwards and inwards.
The pedal bin according to the invention works as follows.
Figures 1 and 2 show that the lid is in closed position. By pressing down portion b of pedal 5, portion a is moved up round the pivoting point of rib c of the pedal arm, which works as a lever. This portion a is provided, as stated earlier, under bottom 6 of container 4. This causes container 4 to be moved up also. As shown in fig. 3, rim 7 of container 4 causes lid 3 to be tilted round hinges 9, because rim 7 rests against lug 8 of lid 3. When pedal 5 is pushed further, lid 3 is opened over more than 90°. This is shown in fig. 4. This tilting movement of lid 3 is limited by stop 10. As container 4 is moved up and lid 3 is simultaneously opened, lip 12 on the container freely passes lip 11 on lid 3. With lid 3 completely opened, lip 12 is situated above lip 11. Now, when the pedal is released, container 4 is lowered and lip 12 strikes against lip 11 and lid 3 topples into its closed position round hinges 9.
In the embodiment as represented in figures 6 to 9 inclusive container 4 is moved up by the pedal also, with rim 7 of the container pushing against lug 8 of lid 3. Lid 3 is opened over more than 90°, as shown in fig. 9. The opened lid 3 rests against stop 15. With lid 3 completely opened, lug 13, provided on the container, rests on edge 14 of lid 3 (see fig. 9). Now, when the pedal is released, container 4 is lowered, in which process lug 13, which rests on edge 14 of the lid, causes the lid to topple into its closed position. This restores the situation as shown in fig. 7.
With the pedal bin according to the invention, the simple pressing of the pedal suffices to open the lid over more than 90°, so that proper access is had to the container for the deposit of waste, and by releasing the pedal the lid will close automatically without any further manual operation being required.
