Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF-NUMERALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,831, dated October 25, 1887.
Application filed May 2l, 1887. Serial No. 239,021. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLLIM F. STARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Numerals, Letters, and Characters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Figure l represents two numerals with out lines embodying my newly-invented design. Fig. 2 represents a letter with an outline embodying my design.
Heretofore large printed numerals and letters have been made up from smaller numerals or letters of the same denomination, the said smaller numerals or letters being of uniform or of one size.
The leading feature of my design is a large numeral or letter made up of or having its face composed of smaller numerals or letters of the same denomination but of various sizes, aecording to the space or position they occupy in forming the body of the larger numeral or letter, and giving to it an ornamental and correct form or configuration. I am thus able to produce a design for a numeral or letter, the face of said numeral or letter presenting a reticulated appearance, owing to the iine lines of which the smaller differential or different-sized let-ters or numerals are formed.
Fig. l shows my design embodied in the llarge numerals 3 and O, the space bounded by the outline of the latter being lled in with smaller numerals O 0 of different sizes. This numeral 0 may also serve as a letter O. Fig. 2 shows my design embodied in a large letter S, the space bounded by the outline ot' which is filled in with smaller letters s s of different sizes.
It Will be observed that the smaller numerals or letters vary in size according to the Width of the larger letter at the points Where they are placed; and they usually vary also in proportion as well as in size, the object being to have them conform to the configuration of the larger numeral or letter and to uniformly break up7 the surface of the same.
I claim- The design for a numeral or letter herein shown and described, the same consisting of a' large outline numeral or letter,th,e space within said outline being filled in with smaller numerals or letters of the same denomination and of different sizes.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM F. STARK.
Witnesses:
HENRY OONNETT, T. L. GAPLINGER.
