WILLIAM SMITH, or GIGERO, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 99,963, dated February 15, 1870.
IMPRQVBMBNT in HOT-AIR FURNACES.
I The Schedule referred, to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SMITH, of Cicero, in the county of Hamilton, andState of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable improvement in Hot-Air .Motors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification,
and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a. representation of a vertical central section of my invention.
right cylindrical casing, of indefinite length. Within this cylinder is the wind-wheel, consisting of a perpendicular shalt, a, and the oblique semicircular wings B B attached thereto. These wings'B B are arranged at equal distances apart on the shaft a in sets of three, each plate or wing being inclined to the perpendicular at an angle of about forty-five degrees.
The casing A may be made of any desired length, and this will determine the number of sets of wings employed.
The shaft a is arranged to have its lower bearing in a step or on a stud-pivot, as at z, and its upper bearing in a cross-piece, c.
The letter A of the drawings designates the up- Should a case of extreme length be employed, sup- I plementary cross-pieces may be employed at different distances to support the shaft.
To the top of the case A, I usually attach an ordinary chimney or stack,'which may be surrounded by any of the dranght-creating ventilators in comm on use. I I
At the bottom of the case A is arranged a number of air-ducts, D D, sufiicient for the supply of air.
A flue, F, leading to a furnace is also connected with the lower portion of the case A, whereby the ascending air is heated.
Connected with the ducts D D are the regulating dampers h it, easily controlled.
A pulley, S, is attached to the shaft annder the case A, and by means of a belt therefrom the power of the wheel is communicated to machinery.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the upright cylindrical case A connected with a furnace, and provided with the airducts d d having dampers h h, the wind-wheel herein described, having upright shaft 11 and inclined blades B B, all constructed and arranged to operate as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM SMITH.
