Description

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 99,626), dated February 8, 1870.
T0 at whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, B. F. BERGI-I, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Mas sachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Vise-Clamps; and I do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front View of the copper facing. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of my invention.
My invention relates to Vises; and it consists, mainly, in the manner of facing the viseclanips with copper, yellow brass, or some other pliable metal, thereby preserving in the clamp the soft facing and at the same time the strength and durability of an iron groundplate.
The lettcr A of the drawings designates the ground-plate of the vise-clamp. This is made of strained iron, bent at the knee a to form a backing, to which is secured, by rivets or otherwise, the facing a, of copper, yellow brass, or
other pliable metal.
I am aware that vise-clamps have been made of copper and brass; but where they are wholly formed of these soft metalsthey crack and become liable to break in the knee, besides bearing a much higher value than my improvement, in which iron and copper are employed at about the rate of three to one. Thus durability, strength, and cheapness are combined in a viseclamp, whose soft-metal faciii g will permit of its use for the most delicate work.

The vise-clamp herein described, consisting of the strainediron ground-plate A, having a facing, c, of copper, yellow brass, or other soft metal, constructed and arranged to operate as specified.
