Description

` faillit-toit einen maar. 'on
Mnonvuassncnusmrs, assienpaironmox Twist magneti nl conronlr'ion or Beit, known that. I, SIMON MACKY, a
" citizenfjpi thellnited States, residing at of Massachusetts, 'have invented eert-ain new4 anduiseful Improvements in Slab-Milling Cutters, of which the following is a specification; i
This invention .relatesto cutters, and particularly to a removable tooth slabbing cutter. v In cutters othiStyPe, as well as in va# rious other forms of toothed cutters, it is desirable thatfthe teeth beremovaile so that they may bereplaced in ,case'of breaking-V lor damage to' a vpart of the `teeth of the'v tool. The provision of a'. readily removable tooth, however, involves diiiiculties both' as to thestrength of the teeth thus inserted and,
also as to the iacility with which-such teeth may be removed orreplaced without a'lecting the efficiency 'of the tooth 'stru'cture.f
It is they object of-my present invention to provide a cutter with teeth which may be easily inserted or-removed' ndat the same time to have such teeth of afc'onstrhction which will aiford a maximum effectiveness. In'the accompanying peciication I -have set forth a construction. .hich is well adiafpted to this end and which I have found e tive in practical use. The illustrative embodiment thus described I have illustrated in' the drawings which forma part of thel specification, reference to the various parts bein had through the medium ot'numerals sirnarlyv employed-throughout.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is-a view of my cutter, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the lcutter'with teeth in place,
view of a tooth, `Fig. 4- is a side view of Fig-5 is a plan view of a-tooth. The body l consists of a cylinder having a suitablebore 2 adapted to receive a spindle,
or shaft upon which itv may bekeyed through the slot, 2. About the surface of 1 are drilled a plurality 'of radial sockets .3 set in spiral rows, which are preferably on about an 'angle of twenty degrees 'ofspi-y ral. The successive rows of sockets are pref# erably arranged so as to be .uncovered by the arrangementof the row in front of'A thenii. In each, of the sockets 3 is. set a' tooth' which consists of a cylindrical tooth Fig. '3 isa fronta tooth looking from, the right ot'Fig.' 3, and` .the body 1 Syccicatton of netten Extent. 6,1911. l. v-Anplicatiorx ledluly 28, c L

formed a cutting blade 5 by lthe stock v to leave a portion w chis pointed substantiallyby 'the vertical plane on this lines of an inscribed angle. .This 'affordsv a blade with 'a broad forward 'face which `60 of the tooth and a lateral face ground .back 'on the line of. a shorter intersecting chord, thus formingan 'acute angle which' ive's a; "suitable'lateral relief. The'blade Yis'also 65 ground back, as shown 'in Figf', tojgivc a rearward relief. The butt ltis sawed nearthrough, asv indicated at. 6, fand is. also rilled, to forma cylindric enlargementas indicated at. 7,' through the. lane of thev 'keri with a' tapered bore, wit which a tapered' pin oblonged in cross'section, as 'indicatedvatS, may-be' driven to expand the butt 4 when locked within the socket --3." The kerf and thepin hole 7 are inclined 75 to -the'vertical 'axis of the tooth so that,al though vthe upper end ofthe `hole'7 and the ker'f 6 are off center, the approach substantiallyto the center oft e butt' near 'its bottom. Infthisway the expansion caused by the driving of the taper pin delivered l more completely within the socket, distribr uting the vexcess of expansion whichfwould otherwise occur near the top .of thetooth more evenly along th'length of the=turn 8`5 embedded in the socket.- Asithe t'aper pin' 8 Sis oblong cross section it may be readily' removed by boring it centrally with a, drill of substantially its lesser diameter 'which will lpermitthe remaining portions ofthc wedge to collapse and 'allow the wedge and tooth to' be readily withdrawn 'when'it is desired to replacethe same. This construc-I tion of tapery pin orwcdge'is very convenient vas it- -does not bring the drill into con tact with the harder metal of vthe tooth which is usually of high speed steel. 1f In arranging the teeth'on thecutter, -I find. itdesirable to' have their forward disposed along theline of the spiral of-the sockets and for this 'reasonpreferito make the rangle y between the front vface'lan'd. the sidetace. of the cutting blade about vsixty-seven degrees when the teeth are disposedmt s' l twenty 4degree angle 4of spiral as this -affords a 'roper amount 'of clearance. A cut r constructed' as jabbve specified". wouldnot only be a. highly ecient tool ih Vbuttev uponthe upper lend of yvhiolr is 55 'rindmgway preferably lies on'the-line of the diameten. 1
operation but is one in which the teeth may be readilyy removed and replaced without delay and without damage to the resto the cutter.
Various modifications may, of course, be made in the construction of the cutter teeth and in the manner of fastening them in, all without departing from the spiritof my invention if Within the limits of the appended claims.
What I, therefore, claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A removable tooth for a cutter comprising, a butt and a blade at one side of its upper end, said butt being split longitudinally outside said blade and having an enlargement adapted to receive a tapered Wedge. l
2. A removable tooth for a cutter comprising, a butt and a blade at one side of its upper end, said butt being split longitudinally outside said blade and having an enlargement adapted to receive a tapered wedge, said recess being inclined to bring ti ts lower end toward the middle of the utt.
3. A blade for a cutter of the class described comprising, a cylindric tooth-butt 'having its upper end ground back on two sides to form a cutting blade, said butt having a longitudinal bore communicating with lateral kerfs to receive a taper pin to eX- pand the butt. v
4.. In a cutter of the` class described, a body having a radial socket therein, a cutter comprising a butt and a blade at one side of its upper end, said body being located in said Socket and being split longitudinally outside of said blade and having a cylindric enlargement and a wedge in said enlargement and flattened upon two opposite sides to facilitate boring for removal.
In testimony whereof, I atx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
