" UNITED sTATEs JOHN E. HILL, on
PATENT oEEroE.
GRIFFIN, GEORGIA.
FAUCET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratented Jan. 24, 1911.
Application filed October 15, 1910. Serial No. 587,282.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN F. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Griffin, in the county of Spalding and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful` Faucet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a'ppertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in faucets, especially adapted to be attached to barrels containing liquids of any character.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a faucet having means associated therewith for boring an opening' in the barrel, whereby' the egress of the liquid from the barrel is quickly and easily accomplished.
A further object of the invention is to provide a faucethaving a novel valve.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which is composed of a minimum number of parts, and is therefore simple in construction, is capable of being quickly attached to any barrel and is positive in operation and cheap to manufacture.
lWith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingv drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages 0f the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, through the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view, taken through the va'lve.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.y
Referring to the drawing, the invention comprises a tubular member or barrel 5, having a peripheral iange 6 at one end thereof, the juncture of the member 5 and the flange 6 being raised to form a consequent seat 7, adapted to receive a gasket 8, said gasket 8 being. preferably formed of rubber and projecting beyond the underface of the flange G. The flange G is provided with a plurality of openings 9 adapted to receive screws or other fastening means (not shown). The opposite end of the member is closed by ahead 10, said head being enlarged, as shown by reference numeral 11, and an interiorly threaded opening 12 is centrally formed in the enlarged portion of the head and is adapted to receive the threaded portion 13 of the shank 14 of a drilling tool, said drilling tool having a bit 15 formed on the inner end thereof, the said threaded end of the tool normally projecting beyond the head of the member 5 and is provided with a squared head 16 adapted to be lengaged by a wrench or other suitable too The barrel is provided with an annular recess 17 formed by opposed peripheral recessed portions or shoulders 18. This recess forms arseat and is adapted to receive a clamping yoke 19, formed of metal or other suitable material. Intermediate the yoke and the said seat is a packing 2O preferably of leather. This yoke has its free ends 21-21 spaced apart and bent radially to receive one end of a hand lever 22, said hand lever being connected to the ends 21 by rivets 23, or other suitable means. The free end of this lever terminates short of the leather packing 20, and arranged intermediate thereof is a bolt 24, which has engagement with both ends 21 of the yoke. A nut 25 is associated with the said bolt for drawing the said ends and consequently tightening the yoke around the barrel. An Opening 26 is formed in the barrel and preferably in the underside thereof, and a corresponding opening 27 is formed in the yoke 19 and the leather packing 20.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that aft-er the bolt has been positioned on a barrel, the tension of the fastening screws will cause the washer 8 to be compressed and thereby form a tight joint. The drill is then revolved by a wrench, and an opening is .thereby formed in the barrel. The drill bit is then drawnV from the barrel and the liquid can then pass freely into themember 5` of the faucet. handle, the opening in the yoke can be brought into register with the boiler 5 and thereby permit the liquid to flow out. Should the connection between the rotary valve and the member 5 become loose, due to Upon movement of the.
wear and tear or the like, the tension of the said yoke upon the member can be adjusted to suit, by means. of the bolt before mentioned.
What I claim is 1. A faucet attachment for receptacles comprising in combination. a tubular meinber having one end open and the other end closed by a head having an enlarged portion, the said head being provided with an interiorly threaded aperture, a drill arranged within the tubular member and provided with an eXteriorl'y threadedy shank adapted tov engage the threaded head of the Asaid tubular member, spaced peripheral teriorly threaded aperture, a drill. arranged within, the tubular member and. provided .an exteriorly threaded shank adapted to engage the threaded head of the said tubul'ar member, spaced peripheral shoulders formed on the tubular member to form a consequent seat, a yoke mounted in the seat for rotary movement, said yoke being formed of a strip of metal and having its free ends bent radially and spaced apart, said tubular member and yoke being respectively provided with ports, and an operating handle for the yoke arranged between and connected to the said free ends of the yoke. v
3., A faucet attachment for receptacles, comprising -invcombination a tubular member having one end open and lthe other end closed by a head having an enlarged poril tion, the said head being provided with an interiorl'y threaded apertura. a y drill arranged within the tubular member and provided with an exteriorly threaded shank adapted to engage the threaded head of the said tubular member, spaced peripheral shoulders formed on the tubular memberto form a consequent seat, a yoke mounted in l. the seat for rotary movement, SaidA yoke being formed of a strip of met-a1 and having its free ends bent radially and spaced apart, said tubular member and yoke being respec;A
tively provided with ports, an operating .t
handle for the yoke arranged between and connected to the said free ends of the yoke,
and tensioning means for the yoke connected to the free end thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed name to this specification in t-he presence o tw'o subscribing witnesses.. e 'JOHN F. Vitnesses ll? E. S. MoDowELL, Roer. WHEATON.
