UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY PINCUS, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALE T0 THOMAS HIGGINS, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR EMERGENCY EXIT-DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1911.
Application filed January 13, 1910. Serial No. 537,842.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PINOUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Emergency Exit-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locking devices, and the object of my invention is to provide a lock especially adapted for emergency exit doors, which may be unlocked easily and quickly, without the use of a key and during an excitement or panic, together with such combinations and elements as are hereinafter more particularly claimed.
I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 a side elevation. Fig. 3 a section along the line mm on Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The passageway leading from an audience room, school room or other place where a number of people assemble, should be always ready for use. It is necessary that some door should be employed for closing the passage way, and which in most instances must be locked in order to prevent people from entering the building by way of the fire escape. I It is, however, advisable that the locked door should be quickly and readily opened when a fire suddenly occurs. The key to the lock is often misplaced and in the case of a school room is generally kept in the teachers desk, usually, when sought for, is impossible to find and if found often cannot be used because of the crush of the children around the door.
In order to provide for locking and unlocking a door without delay and with which a crowd of panic stricken people will not interfere, I have made this invention.
The door, A, opens outwardly and is provided on its inner surface with a rod, B, bent as shown in Fig. 1, with a main portion, 1), extending partly across the door and two portions bent at substantially right angles, as at c, 0, said right angled portions, 0, c, then being bent substantially parallel to the main portion, 6, as at d, e; The portions d and e are movably secured by suitable brackets, D, E, to the face of the door. The rod, B, is capable of a rotative motion in the brackets, D, E. The main portion, b, moving to and from the face of the door A.
The bracket, E, is preferably constructed of light metal and is provided with portions adapted to engage the face of the door, andto be secured thereto by suitable screws, 1, 7",
but having a raised portion, 'F, preferably.
intervening said parts attached to the door. The portion, 6, of said bent rod extends through and is movable in an opening in one of the portions of the bracket, E, secured to the face of the door. The raised portion, F, of the bracket, E, is provided with a diagonally placed slot, G, into which slot the portion 0 of the bent rod, B, passes, the movement of said rod away from the surface of the door causing the rod to move laterally and to force the end, e, beyond the edge of the door, into a retaining bracket, H, in the door jamb, thus locking the door; while a reverse movement of the bent rod, B, will force the portion, 6, thereof, out of the bracket, H, and unlock the door. It is apparent that a crowd against the door, A, would not prevent the raising of the bent rod, B, and thus the ready and quick withdrawal of the locking end of the rod. Should the rod end stick in the door the great purchase obtainable from the portion, b, of the bent rod, would be sure to loosen it very quickly.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A fastening device for emergency exit doors comprising a bail-shaped rod extending from one side of the door to the other; a keeper on the door jamb to receive the end of the rod; brackets for supporting the ends of said rod in connection with the door, one of said brackets provided with a raised diagonally slotted portion in which slot said rod reciprocates, whereby the end of the rod will be projected into or withdrawn from said keeper, depending upon the direction of the movement.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY PINCUS.
