Application ledvanuary 28, 1910. Serial No. 540,683.
To all whom may concern.'
le it. known that l, Culturas C. Crue- MAN, a citizen oi the United States, residini; at Medford, in the county of Grant and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the YFollowingis a -specilicatioir The invention relates to an improvement t in locks, and is particularly directed to a lock adapted to lic-operated by a combination or l ,a master key independent et the combination. Y
The niain object of the present invention is the prorision oi a lock which may be controlled and operatedtnrough the knowl edgcof the combination or in which the locking bolt may be shifted by a master key independent of the combination, whereby a number or' locks may be set on ditlerL ent combinations to be operated only by the individuals knowing` such combinations and yet be capable of being opened by an authorized person having a master key.
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in Which:-
Figui#` 1. is an ele 'ation of tlie lock. Fig. 2 is rear elevation With the rear Wall vof the casingV removed, the lock bolt being shown in projected position. Fig. 3 is a similar vienY with the lock bolt retracted by the use of the combination devices. Fig. 4 is a section on line Li-'i of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a broken perspective or' lthe lock bolt.
Referring particularly to the accompany ing dravvings, the improved; lock includes a casing l or" any desired size," in which near the relatively rear edge are inounted the combination disk studs 2 and 3. The outer ends of these studs, are provided with operating knobs d carrying numbered disks 5 designed to register with an annular band 6 fixed upon the front Wall of the casing and carrying the usual. radial lines 7 with which the numbers on the disks 5 are to be properly arranged for forming the co1nbi nation with which the lock is set, all ot which is of the usual construction oi coinbination locks. @n the studs 2 and 3 Within the casing are secured the lock disks 8 and 9 formed in their peripheral edges with a series of indentations 10 and with a releasing notch 1l. Mounted for movement between the disks 8 and 9 is a. locking bolt made up of a bolt section 12 and a slide section 13. The slide section is formed at its rear end to provide a guide strip 11i designed to slide in a bracket l5 secured to the inner surface of the front wall of the casing,^said slide section in advance ot the guide llbeing provided with a transverse locking' bar lo, having` rearwardly projectt ing lugs 1T at the respective terminals. Frein the cross bar there. are forwardly projected spaced parallel bars 18, having,r their 'forward ends. provided with outwardly projecting lugs il).
i The boltsection l2 of the lock comprises the usual nose end .20 designed'to slide through an apertnrel. Jformell in on end 'wall of the case in .the locking operation. The rear end of the bolt section is reduced in Width, at QQ, 'to slidably lit between the lugs i9 of the slide section, the bolt section at the rear end of the reduced portion being termed Awith laterally projecting lugs 23, 'which designed to ride upon the bars i8 and in the forward position of the bolt section to engage the rear surface of the lugs 19 of the slide section. The lower edge of the bolt section is provided with a key recess 24 and the face of the casing l is formed with keyhole 25, so that in the introduction and turning ot a key the bits thereof will engage the rear Wall of the recess and retract the bolt section. A leaf spring 25 is secured in the casingl, bearing at its fret. end in a recess termed in the boltsection, whereby the bolt section is normally projected into locking position. At an appropriate point the casing is provided with an operating handle 27, tne stud of `which projects Within the casing and is provided with a. disk head dhaviiig a projection designed to bear n rmally upon the relatively upper edge of the reduced portion of the bolt 'sect-ion direct-ly. forward ot the relatively upper lug f olf the slide section. c
ln use 'when the combination disksv are properly set, the recesses l in the locking disks S and 9 Will be so arranged that in .the rearward movement or -tlie colt as an entirety the lugs i7 of the cross bar will enter said recesses, as shown in. Fig. El. lll/hen it is desired, therefore., te operate the lock by the combination devices, the cisks the projection 29 'to bear si, the adjacent lug 19 and move the in the rea-rn ward direction. is the lugs 19 bear against the lateral lugs of the bolt section, said section wiil7 .in the ope lation described, be
knowledgeiof the Combination and Without the master key, or by a person havinga key without knowledge of the combination. The lock is, therefore, particularly adaptedfor use under those conditions lin which two or more persons shouid have access to the re,- cepta'cie protected by the lock, as in post oiiice boxes, rural mail boxes, and the like, wherein it .is desirable that the individual users of the boxes control their locks by the: combinations known only to themselves,
whiie the proper postal authority can open any and all boxes at pleasure by the use of the master lieyE l claim l. A lock including Casing, a lock bolt therefor, said bolt comprising forward 'and rear sections disposed in longitudinal alinenient, the forward section being formedto project beyond the casing to engagethe lock lkeeper, the meeting ends of thesections being connected to permit independent end- Wise sliding movement of the sectlons, mannallyk adjustable means adapted when set 1n a certain position to permit movement, ofy
the rear section, and means engaging the rear section in advance of the connection between the sections to operate the bolt as an entirety, said forward section being formed to permit its Ioperation by a key i'ndependently of the rear section.
ZA casing, a locking bolt therefor made in sections, said sections being arranged in i Longitudinal ialinement and their meeting `ends connected for independent slidingl movement, a, cross bar carried by the rear section and terminally formedy to provide lugs, a notched disk arranged adjacent each lug` and formed With' a reeess te receive the lug when the disk is in a predetermined position, and means mounted in the casing to engage the rear section in advance of its connection with the forward section to operate the bolt as an entirety, said forward section being formed to permit its independent operation by a key.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
