E. F. SHALLOW.
GAGE 000K.
APPLIGATION FILED OUT, 18, 1910.

EDWARD Farmers SHALLOW, F PinLAmiLPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAGE-COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 20, 1910.
Application filed October 18, 1910. Serial No. 587,771. I
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD FRANoIs SHALLow,.a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification. The present invention has reference to improvements in gage cocks, and more especially with relation to the testing valves ordinarily employed in connection with such devices. the improvements in question comprehending generally a special construction for valves of that type, and a particular form of controlling means for the same.
A structural embodiment of the invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved gage cock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan .view.
In said drawing, 1 designates the case of the cock,- and .2 the threaded stem formed integral with thecase and adapted to screw into the boiler head at the proper point.
- Through the stem 2 and the adjacent arm 3 of thecase is formed a longitudinal bore 4 which communicates by way of a channel,
5 of reduced diameter with an internally threaded bore 6 alining with the first bore and formed through the opposite arm 7 of the case. Bore 6 also communicates, ad-
acent its inner endfiwith a second channel 8 that opens, in turn, into the valve seat 9 formed in the neck portion 10 of the.case, which portion'is provided with a spout 11 Whose-bore opens into said seat through a .port 12 formed in the seat wall, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Bore 6 is designed to receive the threaded stem of a rotatable valve'13 provided with an operating handle 14 of any suitable type. Said stem passes through an opening formed in i1 cap 15 threaded on arm ,7, and its inner cm the point of intersection between bore 6 and channel'5. The arrangement is such, therefore, that communication between the boiler and the channel 8 leading to the spout 11 may be opened or closed by turning the controlling valve 13inthe proper direction. This valve, however, is designed to remain is reduced, as indicated by the numeral 116, so as to enable it to fit seat 17 formed at 'boiler,
in open position under ordinary circumstances. The outer. end of bore 6 may be suitably packed, as will be understood.
The bore which constitutes and produces seat 9 receives the stem of the main or test ing valve 18. v The outer portion of this stem is slightly steep spiral threads 19 which engage the corresponding threads formed in the inner wall of a collar 20 fitted on the upper end of the case neck 10 and ofv a threaded cap 2l. cap bears upon an out-turned flange 22 formed on said collar,
held in place by means tight in any suitable manner.. The lower end of the stem of valve 18 is normally held bearing atone end against a depending stud 24 carried by the valve handle lever 25, and" engaged at the other end withthe upstanding end of a pin 26 which projects laterally enlarged, and is formed with.
The top wall of said the joint be .ween the latter andthe neck being ren'de ed fluid from a lateral arm 27 formed integral with the body portion of the case. central portion of this spring vertical pin 28 formed upon arm 27. The
The coiled embraces a handle lever above referred to is attachedby means of a set-screw 29 or the like to the upper end of the valve stem 18, and is designed for connection to an operating device (not shown) of the usual or any preferred type, for which purpose its outer end is provided with anaperture 30.,
In operation, the controlling valve 13 is maintained normally in open position, while the testing valve 18' is held in closed posiposition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, against the pressufe of its controlling spring,
whereupon valve 18 will be turned and will rise to an extent suflicient' to uncover port 12,
thereby enabling the water to flow out, if its level be high enough, through the port the-handle lever is shifted into the tion by the torsion spring, thus opening When a is y ing valve, and that the controlling spring forthe latter valve is located exteriorly of the case. By utilizing the controlling valve, it is possible to entirely cut off communica tion between the boiler and the branch 8 leading to the valve seat 9, so as to permit said seat to be ground or otherwise renewed,
without entailing the detachment of the I and also to permit be withdrawn and device from the boiler, the testing valve itself to inspected, and replaced if necessary. By
locating thespring exteriorly of the case, it is enabled to exert its full pressure upon the handle lever and, at the sametime, is not exposed to the action of the water. The arrangement of the spring, moreover, is such that it is perfectly supported and hel against displacement.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a gage cock, ahollow case provided with an interiorlylocated. valve seat, and with an exteriorlylocated arm formed with a lateral projection; of a valve rotatably fitted in said seat; a handle lever secured to said valve and provided with a stud; and a torsion spring located exteriorly of said case and-having one level, as will be under the combination, with 'end thereof engaged with said projection,
and the other arm with said stud.
' ,2. In a gage cook, the combination, with l a hollow case provided with an interiorlyl located valve seat, and'with an exteriorlylocated arm formed with a pair of lateral pins; of a valve rotatably fitted in said seat; a handle lever secured to said valve and provided with a stud; and a torsion spring located exteriorly of said case and formed with a coiled central portion embracing one of said pins, said spring having one en l thereof engaged with the other pin, and the other end with said stud.
8. In a gage cock, the combination, with a hollow case provided with an interiorlylocated valve seat, and with a spout having t its bore openin directly through one wall of said seat; 0 a valve rotatably fitted in I said seat and formed with steep spiral threads; a tubular member provided upon said case and formed with lnternal threads co-acting with the'first named threads, for causing a'quick endwise movement of said valve when rotated; a handle lever secured to said valve; and an eXteriorly-lo cated torsion spring connected at one end with said case, and at the other end to said lever, for normally holding said valve in closed position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD renters SHALLOW.
