Be it known that I, AMos vA. JAQUA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Blinds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. y

This invention relates to blinds having oscillating slats; and

It consist-s in a novel means of supporting the slats at one end, in connection with machinery within the `slide for operating or adjusting the slats, whereby the blind is not only rendered more ornamental by the removal of the rod and itsconnections out of sight, but also more durable by the protection thereby afibrded said parts.

Referring to the accompanying drawings- Figure l represents a side view of a window-blind constructed according to my invention, having a part ofthe stile broken away for illustration of the slatadj'ustingmachinery arranged therein;

Figure 2 represents avertical section of the same, taken in the linea x, fig. 1, and at right angles to said figure;

Figure 3 represents a similar view of the same, taken in the line y y, iig. 11; and

Figure 4 represents a horizontal section of the stile thereof, taken in the line z z, figs. 1 and 3. p

A is the frame of a window-blind, and B its movable slats'.

These slats B, instead of being made merely to lap each other at their edges, when closed or folded to gether. thereby forming the irregular' surface formed by blind-slats of ordinary construction when closed, have formed in each edge, but upon their opposite sides, a rebate, as shown in iig. 2, for the purpose of allowing the slats, when closed, to form a plane Vor smooth surface by the fitting within each other of the rebates of the adjoining slats, as also shown in same figure. This not only gives the blind a more iinished appearance when closed, but also more etfectually excludes dust and other extraneous matter from the apartment, and also offers a more eectual resistance to any attempt at forcible entrance from without.

Thetenons at one end of these slats, instead of, .being rounded and fitted in holes bored in the vstile of the blind, in the usual way, are left square, and received within pivoted metal sockets, c, which are fitted to turn within bearings formed in a metal plate screwed or otherwise secured to the inner edge of the stile.

rlhese pivotcd sockets c are provided, upon their outer ends, with arms or cranks, h, which are connected with each other by a ro'd, C, as shownin fig. 3, i so that the oscillation of one slat will insure a like movement of them all. l.

One or more of these pivoted sockets c are constructed or provided with spur-wheels or pinions, s, for gearing with. a rack, f, as shown in iig.

This rackfhas a i'ongitudhial sliding movement up. or down, being retained in place, and guided by means of' fixed pins or studs, t' t', and is opera-ted' from without, for adjustment of the slats, by means of a thumb piece, g, working through a slot, o, formed in the. stile.

The slats B, when closed down, may be secured or locked in that position by means of a latch, b, pivoted to the bottom slat, and allowed to swing down into a notch or recess formed inthe bottom rail of the blind, indicated by dotted lines thereat in fig. 1.

The latch b. may also be locked by a p ivotcd arm, j, as shown. Any otherlocking-device may, however, when desirable, be substituted for the one described.

Vhen desirable, the pivoted sockets'c may all be provided with the pinions s, and the rac-kf may be made to extend suiiciently above and below for gearing with the pnions, thereby dispensing with the use of the rod C, and the cranks or arms h.

What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
