Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led July 19, 1910. Serial No. 572,729.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH HAELEBJIAN, a subject of the Empire of Turkey, and residing at Bridgeport, F airfield county, Gonnecticut, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Cleaning Combs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combs, but more particularly' has reference to self cleaning combs such as are provided with devices for readily cleaning the comb after using, and has for its object to provide a very simple and effective device of this description, and with this end in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinat-ion of parts such as will be hereinafter fully explained and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this de scription.
In the accompanying drawing Figures l and 2 are views of opposite sides of the comb equipped with my improvement. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of opposite sides of the comb with the cleaning string in position across alternate sections only of the teeth but not around the same, and Fig. 5 is a view showing the parts of the comb when the string is pulled free of the teeth sections to cleanse the same.
Similar' numbers of reference denote like parts in the several gures of the drawing.
l is the body of thecomb which is preferably made with a double set of teeth eX- tending from opposite edges of the body, one set of teeth, denoted by the numeral 2, being of the usual construction and perfectly plain, while the other set is divided into sections 3 that are secured together at their bases by wires 4 so that these sections are separated by spaces 5.
6 is a cleansing string` or cord which is preferably provided with a knot 7 at one end that is fixed to the teeth 2, or which may be permanently secured to the body of the comb in any suitable and ordinary manner.
The free end of the cleansing string is wound or passed across opposite sides of succeeding sections 3 and between the spaces 5, as shown at Figs. 3 and 4L, and is then returned and wound in like manner so as to present the appearance shown at Figs. l and 2.
I prefer to employ a comb that has teeth on opposite sides of the body so that the teeth 2 may be first employed to loosen or detach foreign matter from the scalp, the comb being then reversed and the sections 3 being utilized to remove such foreign matter, after which the cleansing string is pulled loose from said sections thereby wiping the latter free from such impurities. The winding or passing of the cleansing string around these sections 3 is really effected in a serpentine course in each direction,
the winding or passing of the string being between the spaces 5 and athwart the side faces of alternate sections, while the return winding or passing of said string brings the latter across the side faces of said sections not covered by the previous winding, so that it will be clear "that the winding or encompassing of these sections is effected in serpentine courses and in reverse directions.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A comb having its teeth bound together in spaced sections, in combination with a cleaning string detachably surrounding said sections.
2. A comb having its teeth bound together in spaced sections, in combination with a cleaning string passed in reverse directions between and around said sections.
3. A comb having teeth permanently bound together in spaced sections, and provided with a` cleaning string one end of which is fixed to the comb while the free end is wound around each successive section in serpentine courses and in opposite directions.
