Description

MIMMO Y 1720673502:
N. PETERS. PNOTOLITMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTQN. D CV is ei'eeted by the operator swaying his body back and stone, andthe stone, so that, while the stock is pitchedapplied to the breast may be more o1' less elevated,'as preferred, so that the operator may either sit. on a low bench, while holding the grinder on the cutters, while the same are in the mowing-machine, orhc may kneel upon the ground.
The branched supports E D may, if preferred, be so pitched, relatively to the stock, that thela-ttermay stand iu other directions than in the line" of' the cutter-edge being ground; for instance., it may stand at right angles to the .cutter-bar, and in line with, or parallel to the plane of the steile, but for guiding the stone'over the cutter-edges while grinding, I prefer to have it in the direction stated.
'lhe movement of the stone over the cutter-edges i'orth whilel holding the stone on the cutter, and turning the cranked driving-wheel 4H.
The ends ot' the vguide-pins Q R may have ii-ietion pads, ot'lndia rubber or any other substance which will lessen the tendency to slide on the faces otthe cutters, whereby the machine will be more easily controlled. 'lhey may also be provided with jam-nuts, to seenre thenrai'ter being adjusted as required. They bear upon the cutteis by one end, while grinding one set of edges, and by the other end, when grinding the other set, the machine being turned the opposite side up.
lt will be observed that my improved machine differs from all others now' in use,.in the application toa frame. or stock of a machine adapted for holding the stone in contact with the cutters, by vmeans of a breaststock and handle, of one or more guiding-pins, acting upon the eutters,or it may be other parts ofthe mowing or reaping-machine, whereby a more perfect control ofthe grinder is obtained. l
Also, in the arrangement of thcsupports of th in the line of the edges being ground, the plane ot' the stone hears such relation to the cutters and the tingers or guards, that it will work up to the apex of the angle between the cutters,y without interference with the edge opposite the one being ground, or vdown to the point,'wit=hout interiering with the'finger or guard, 11o matter what may be the diameter ot' the stone, whereby'the movement ot' the stone over the edge to be ground may be effected wholly in one direction bythe forward movement ot' the body,'and in the other by the force of the hand in holding the stock against the breast, thereby giving the hand greater power to resist the lateral tendency ol` the machine, due to thcaction of the stone on the. cutters, than can be. had in any arrangement where the movement oi'the stone is in a direction laterally to the stock, iu which case, both the movement of the stone and the lateral tendency ot'the stone. in grinding must be coutrolled wholly by hand.
Moreover, by my arrangement, the action of the stone in grindingr has much less teudencyto carry the stock laterally, because the plane. in which the stone works is nearer the, line of the stock than at right angles thereto.
' Haring thus fully described my invention, J
\V hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1. The'combinntimi, with a grinding-stone| and operati11g-mechanism arranged on a breast-stock, ot' one or more adjustable guides, arranged to bear and slide back and forth on the cutters or cutter-bar, substantially as speelied.
2. The. arrangement, with the breast-stock, of' the supports for the stone-mandrel for maintaining the stock in line with the edge. ofthe cutter being ground, while the plane otthe stone is perpendicular to the cutter-bar, substantially as specified.
ANSON P.v THAYER.
