MAX MANNESMANN, OF REMSCI-IEID, GERMANY.
SHOE AND BOOT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 19, 1908.
Patented July 5, 1910. Serial No. 449,371.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX MANNnsMANn, a subject of the German Emperor, and resi- -dent of Remscheid, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes and Boots, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shoes and boots of that type which in their toe-piece have several partitions to form separate toe-chambers therein, and its object is to make said partitions of a certain length, i. e. that they reach with their rear ends to the joints between the toes and touch the latter when walking downhill, whereby the foot is supported in a very advantageous way and the toes are prevented from being forced with their front ends into the extremity of the toe-piece. At the same time the upper leather of the shoe or boot may be so constructed as to support the instep of the foot also when walking downhill.
The accompanying drawing shows a shoe provided with the improvements. Figure 1 is a sectional plan View of the same, Fig. 2 shows the shoe in a sectional elevation in the position when walking downhill.
The partitions 1 are fixed between and to the sole 2 and the upper leather 3 respectively in such a way as to form separate toechambers in the shoe. The partitions are made so lon that they reach with their rear ends to the oints 4: between the toes so that they are capable by touching said joints to effectively support the foot when walking downhill, sufficient play being left between the front ends of the toes and the extremity of the toe-piece to prevent the toes from being forced into the latter. To prevent damage to the joints between the toes, the rear ends of the partitions may be provided with pads 5 of soft material, said pads forming at the same time a strengthening for said rear ends.
To prevent deformation of the partitions by the pressure of the foot thereon when walking downhill, the edges of the rear ends of the same are preferably concave-shaped as shown at 6 in Fig. 2. Further to prevent a pressure of the partitions on the lower part of the joints between the toes, the rear ends of the partitions project preferably farther to the rear at their upper than at their lower parts. To further support the foot when walking downhill, that part 3 of the upper leather which lies above the instep of the foot is so designed that it acts, by effectively supporting said instep, in unison with said partitions when walking downhill.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a boot or shoe, the combination of the upper leather and the inner sole, a set of partitions corresponding in number to the number of toe spaces of the human foot, said partitions being fixed at their lower edges to the inner sole and at their upper edges to the upper, said partitions extending rearwardly to the points to be occupied by the joints between the toes so as to engage said joints to prevent movement of the wearers foot into the tip of the shoe, the rear edge of each partition being provided with a laterally widened pad, the rear edge of each partition having a concave form with its upper edge extending rearwardly a distance greater than its lower edge.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX MANN ESMANN.
Witnesses M. KI'J'PPERS, H. STELYER.
