Description

A; STEINB6K Match Safe.
Patented Oct. 26, 1869.
aiilbmg waitedgs/am AUGUST STEINBQK, OF NEW- YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 96,163, dated October 26, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-SAFES The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST STEIXBGK, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Match- Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference'being had to the accompanying draw ings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional view of my improved match-sat'e.
Figure 2 is a plan or top view-of the. same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
'lhis'im ention relates to improvements in matchsafes; and
It consists in the combination of the self-igniting wick wit-l1 the closed case, provided with a sliding cover and an adjustable candle-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A, in the. drawing, represents a box or case, made of sheet-metal, or other suitable material, of suit-able size and form.
In it is arranged a wick, B, which can, by'a ratchetwheel, a, or otherwise, be fed up or down, at will.
The box is provided with an opening, I), in its top or side, and the wick can, by means of the heading apparatus, be caused to project through said opening,
as in fig. 1.
The wick has been prepared by being dipped'in a solution of saltpetre, and, after being dry, in anothersolntion of phosphorus, in bisnlphuret of carbon, so
that it has thereby been made self-igniting.
it may be treated with other suitable chemicals, and Ido not confine myself to the use of the preparation specified.
The end of the wick will, when forced out through the opening I), be spontaneously ignite-d, without the use of friction, by simple contact with the air. \Vhen not to be used, the wick is withdrawn into the box, and the aperture'i) is closed by a slide, cover, or valve, 0. e
The box may contain another compartment, 1), in which a taper or candle-holder, E, may be arranged. This holder can be arranged sliding, so thatthe candle can be forced out, as in fig. 1, to stand so near to the wick that it will be ignited by the same. The wick.
can be drawn in, and the cover or slide 0 soon as the candle is thus light-ed.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent '.l.hc self-igniting wiclgB, in combination with the closed case A, having the sliding cover 0, ratchet a, and adjustable candle-holder E, all arranged as described, for the purpose specified.
