Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 17, 1910.
Application filed September 21, 1909. Serial No. 518,773,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. CHAMBLESS,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Acme, in the county of Hardeman, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices and has particular reference to a device of that kind adaptedto secure the mouth of a grain bag or the like.
Another object is the provision of a device which is exceedingly simple in struc ture, and easily operated, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
\Vith these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification :Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device showing the jaws in open position. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the aws locked. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the key. Fig. 4: is a sectional plan view of the device.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The device is shown to consist of a pair of substantially semi-circular-shaped jaws designated by the numerals 5 and 6. One end of one of these jaw members is hinged so as to provide a pair of knuckles between which is placed one end of the other jaw member, these united ends being provided with alining openings for the reception of a pivot pin 7, by means of which the jaws are pivotally united.
The free end of the jaw member 6 terminates in a thickened elongated head 8. The head 8 is provided with an axial threaded bore 9, the function of which will appear later. The free end of the opposite jaw member 6 has fixedly secured to its outer face a sleeve 10, the latter curving to the shape of the said jaw 6, and being of a size to receive the elongated head 8 of the opposite jaw. It might here be stated that the head 8 is exteriorly provided with an annular shoulder which serves to limit the inward movement of the head into the sleeve 10. l
A locking key or member is designated in general by the numeral 11. This locking key is circular in cross section and slightly greater in length than the length of the sleeve 10, and is of a size to nicely fit within the latter. One end of the locking member or key is screw threaded as shown at 12, while a portion adjacent the opposite end is provided with an enlarged eye 13, which performs the double function of forming a finger hold for turning the key and also a stop to bear on one end of the sleeve 10 and limit the inward movement of the key into said sleeve.
From the foregoing it is evident when the jaws 5 and 6 are brought together and the elongated head 8 enters one end of the sleeve 10, that by inserting the locking member or key into the opposite end of the sleeve so that its threaded end may be turned into engagement with the threads of the bore 9 of the elongated head that the said jaws will be securely locked together. It can be seen when a device of this kind is passed around the mouth of a bag and then closed and looked as just described that the said mouth will be securely closed and held against accidental opening. It will be further observed that the device may be employed in various ways and if desired may be employed as a key ring or a lock for bicycles or the like.
What I claim as new is 1. As an article of manufacture a lock comprising a pair of semi-circular aws pivotally united at one end, an elongated head provided with a threaded bore arranged at the free end of one of said jaws, a sleeve on the free end of the opposite jaw to receive said head and a locking member insertible through said sleeve and into the threaded bore of said head.
2. A look consisting of a pair of semicircular jaw members hingedly united at one end, one of said jaw members terminating and a locking member insertible through cent its opposite end With a stop to bear on one end of said sleeve. 10
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence 01' two Witnesses.
' JAMES A. CHAMBLESS.
