CLAMP FOR HOLDING FORMS OR STRETCHERS FOR HOSIERY.

Be it known that I, ALBERT C. BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Holding Forms or Stretchers for Hosiery, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved clamp for holding forms or stretchers for hosiery, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this kind, which can be operated by pressure of the body to securely hold a form or stretcher for hosiery, leaving the operators hands free to manipulate the stocking and force it onto the form or stretcher.

A further object is to provide an improved device of this kind, which is of eX- tremely simple inexpensive construction, which can be readily secured to a table or other similar support, and which will most efiectually clamp the form or stretcher in operative position when pressure is applied against the device by the body of the operator.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a View in cross section of the device. Fig. 3, is a top plan view, and Fig. 4, is a view in end elevation showing the device in position to clamp the form or stretcher.

1 represents a table or other suitable support to which my improved device is connected by hinges 2, one leaf of each hinge being secured to the top of the table, and the other leaf to a longitudinal bar 3. An elongated block 4 is fixed to bar 3, and a second elongated block 5 is connected to block 4 by means of hinges 6, said block 5 being so positioned that its shoulder 7 serves as a stop to limit the outward hinged movement of the block 5. Block 4 is preferably provided on its upper face with a longitudinal recess 7 and a metal wearing plate 8 is secured in this recess, and is bent upward at its outer edge and disposed in the front of the block 5.

A sheet of leather 9 is secured to the inner face of block 5, and a leather covering 10 is secured over the upper edge of bar 3, and around a longitudinal flange or enlargement 11 on said bar, and operates with the leather sheet 9 to frictionally engage a form or stretcher shown in dotted lines at 12 in Fig. 4.

To normally hold the block 5 in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a bow'spring 13 is secured at one end to bar 3, and at its other end bears outward against a pin 14 on block 5, so that the pressure of this spring normally holds the block in the position shown.

In operation, the stretcher or form shown at 12 is positioned between block 5 and the leather cushion 11, and the operator presses his body as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 against block 5, pressing the latter toward the table, when this block 5 will securely clamp the form or stretcher at an angle shown in Fig. 4, which disposes the form or stretcher in just the proper position for ready manipulation of the hose to stretch it onto the form, and the operators hands are both free to manipulate the stocking. When he relieves the block 5 of pressure, the spring 13 will return the block to normal position, form 12 with the stocking thereon can be removed and an empty form placed in position to receive the next stocking.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alternations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a bar, of a cushion on the bar, a block secured to the bar, a second block, hinges connecting said blocks, a leather strip secured to the inner face of said hinged block, a spring exerting outward pressure on said hinged block, and said hinged block having a shoulder limiting its outward movement.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with alongitudinal bar, of a longitudinal block secured to said bar, a second longitudinal block, hinges connecting said blocks, a leather strip secured over said bar and forming a cushion, a leather strip or plate secured to the inner face of said block, a flat spring secured at one end to said bar, a pin in said hinged block against which said spring bears, said hinged block having a shoulder limiting its outward movement.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a longitudinal bar, of a longitudinal block secured to said bar, a second longitudinal block, hinges connecting said blocks, a leather strip secured over said bar and forming a cushion, a leather strip or plate secured to the inner face of said block, a flat spring secured at one end to said bar, a pin in said hinged block against which said spring bears, said hinged block having a shoulder limiting its outward movement, said fiXed block having a longitudinal recess in its upper face, and a wearing plate secured in said recess.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support, of a longitudinal bar, hinges connecting said bar with said support, a cushion on said bar, a longitudinal block fixed to said bar, a second longitudinal block having hinged connection with said fixed block, a cushion on the bar toward which said hinged block is adapted to be moved, and a spring normally holding said hinged block away from said cushion.
