APPARATUS FOR COVERING FILLED SACKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Hanan E. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Covering Filled Sacks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for applying an outer covering or sack to filled sacks, the object being to provide a simple and effective device for guiding and delivering a'filled sack into the outer sack covering therefor.
It is customary where filled sacks are to be shipped or transported for a considerable distance, to inclose the same within an outer covering or sack of heavier material, so as to protect and maintain clean the lighter covering for sacked goods. U'nally, this outer sacking or covering of the filled sack is done by one workman being required to hold open the mouth of the outer covering or sack, while another workman slips the filled sack therein, which is a slow, expensive, and somewhat cumbersome manner of handling the filled sack for the purpose of placing the outer covering thereon.
To comprehend the present invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the sacking apparatus, the position of the tilting section thereof when thrown upwardly being inclicated in dotted lines, the outer covering for the filled sack being shown as applied to the guide funnel portion of the tilting section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the features dis closed by Fig. 1 of the drawings. Fig. 3 is an end view of the tilting section.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to indicate any suitable supporting structure, carrying in the present case a platform 2, which is pivotally connected thereto at 3, so as to permit of being tilted or swung at an inclination to the horizontal, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing. When the platform is lowered, the projections e thereof rest within the seats 5 of the supporting structure 1.
In the present case, there is secured to the platform 2, a funnel guide 6, the walls 6 of which are outwardly flared toward the forward or receiving end of the guide in order to provide an enlarged end portion for the Specification of Letters Patent.

reception of a filled sack. At its opposite or discharge end portion, the said guide terminates in a funnel shaped extension 7, which projects a slight distance beyond the platform 2, the said overhanging portion being designed to receive the open mouth of an empty sack 8, which is fitted thereover, and which is held open thereby. This sack 8, is for the purpose of receiving the filled sack 9 as slipped from the funnel guide, and serving as an outer cover therefor.
In the operation of covering the filled sack, the filled sack 9 to be covered is placed onto the funnel guide 6, preferably slipped thereon from the enlarged flared end portion 8 thereof, when the open mouth of an empty sack 8 is fitted over the extended portion of the funnel shaped extension 7. The operator having charge of the apparatus then throws upwardly the swinging platform or section 2, so as to tilt the same at an inclination, which causes the filled sack to slip downwardly on the funnel guide 6 and through the funnel shaped extension 7, which acts as a guide, into the open end of the held sack 8, and to slide therein its full distance. The sack 8, with the filled sack therein, is then slipped from off the funnel extension 7 and the open mouth thereof closed in the usual manner.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is- 1. A device for covering filled sacks, the same comprising a guide for receiving a filled sack, and an extended open ended funnel shaped piece projecting forwardly of the body portion of the guide a substantial distance, whereby a bag may be sleeved upon said extension and held thereby, a platform for said guide comprising a substantially rectangular member projecting rearwardly of the rear end of the guide and the guide being open at said end and forming in effect a continuation of said platform, means 'for securing the guide to the platform, and a pivotal support adjacentthe forward end of the platform.
2. A device for covering filled sacks, the same comprising a guide for receiving a filled sack, said guide terminating at its forward end in an open ended funnel shaped piece, whereby the open end of a receiving sack may be slid up on said forward end and held thereby, a standard having bracket arms extending forwardly and rearwardly name to this specification in the presence of at the upper end tfhereof, a pivotlal connectwo subscribing Witnesses. tion between one 0 said arms ant the latform and a loose connection between the; VARREN MURRAY 5 other arm and the platform, whereby the Witnesses:
