STOCKING DARNER.
APPLIOATION FILED FEB. 20, 1909.
INVENTOR ATTORN EYS WJJQ Pi BY y WITNESSES ROBERT T. THOMAS, OF UTICA, NEW YORK.
STOCKING-DARNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 1120.28, 1909.
Application filed February 20, 1909. Serial No. 479,063.
The object of my invention is to provide a stocking darner, which is simple and well adapted to meet the requirements of such a device.
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the holder part of the darner in what might be termed open position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the darner with a stocking in position thereon.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3, 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlargement of a portion of the same section.
Referring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description, 10 indicates the holder constituting the body of the device which is of a plate-like character having its ends upwardly turned, as indicated at 10 10" which are relatively broad and extended. Substantially centrally the holder is provided with an opening 11 having upwardly standing flanges or walls 12 surrounding the same. The upper edges of these Walls 12 are preferably turned inwardly into hook-shape as shown particularly in Fig. 4. The opening 11 is adapted to re ceive the rectangular frame 14, which fits quite closely in the opening and is provided at its upper edge with an outwardly projecting flange, as shown at 14 giving stiffness to the upper edge of the frame and serving other purposes, as hereinafter pointed out. Hinged to the upwardly turned ends 1O are the holding clamps or clasps 15 preferably formed of wire in the nature of bails and preferably outwardly bowed. The swinging side of these clasps are adapted to engage under the flange edge 14 of the holding frame 14. The frame 14 is an independent piece and is adapted to be removed and placed in a stocking and located about the point to be darned. When so located it is forced into the opening 11 and the arrangement is such that a portion of the fabric of the stocking will be held stretched across its position in the holder.
the frame. The fabric and the frame wedge in the opening and particularly between the flanges 12 surrounding it and are thereby held. The other portions of the stocking will be reefed and distributed around on top of the holder and secured by swinging in the clamps or clasps 15 and engaging them under the edge 14 In ordenthat the swinging side of the clasp 15 may be engaged and disengaged, the upturned ends or extensions 10 of the holder will be made more or less elastic and yield ing so that by the application of sufiicient force the swinging side of the clasp can be disengaged from the flange 14 and likewise engaged therewith. The broad or extended character of the upturned ends 10 10 affords a substantial housing or protection for the reefed parts of the stocking and means for the operator handling the device without the stocking intervening.
In order to give stilfness to the body por tion of the plate and particularly in order to raise that portion of the fabric stretched across the frame 14 from the surface on which the holder rests, the holder is provided with a bead 16 on its under surface, which is preferably embossed in the sheet metal of which the device is preferably formed.
This darner is more particularly intended for use with sewing machines from which the presser foot has been removed. The height of the frame 14 is kept reduced to such an extent that the device can be readily slipped under the ordinary sewing machine needle when in its highest position. When the sewing machine is operated the device is moved about on the table in any desired direction in which the threads are to be carried. The bead 16 on the under side of the holder elevates the portion of the fabric being operated upon sufficiently so that it will be out of engagement with the usual cloth feed on a sewing machine, thereby leaving the device more free to be manipulated by hand. Then the darning is completed the stocking can be removed by releasing the clasps l5 and slipping the frame 14 out from The frame can be relocated on as many different points requiring repair as desired and replaced in the holder, and the portions of the stocking outside of the frame redistributed and secured on the holder. With this device the portion of the fabric being operated upon frame fitting the opening and bail-like clamps hinged to said upturned ends and arranged to turn inwardly to holding position, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of February 1909.
ROBERT T. THOMAS.
manner for operation, but the portions of the stocking not being operated upon are conveniently and without trouble distributed and secured on the holder and can be with facility released and removed.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination in a stocking darner of a plate-like body having an opening therethrough and upturned ends, a reniovablel is not only held taut and in satisfactory l l l Vitnesses EMIMA S. Hnssn, SARAH E. CLARK.
