ICE-CREAM CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nowfi, 1909.
Application filed May 27, race". Serial No. acacia To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LOUIS. H.'Scnnon,' a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Cream Cans, of which thefollowing, is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in ice cream cans and more particularly pricking cans used at soda fountains and similar places for holding difieren't kinds of ice cream and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide 'an improved duplex can in which two difierent kindsof ice cream may be kept in a single ice-box or holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide improvedmeans for retaining the can in the usual perforated ice spacing cylinder or jacket and retaining'the latter in the ice. With the above and other objects in view,
. 'the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully de- 1. scribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an ice-box showing my improved duplex can therein, with its cover removed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the spacing jacket showing the can section's secured -therein and also showing the cover spaced slightly above the can; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the same;
Fig. 4 is aperspective view of one. of the can sections; and Figs. 5 and 6 are'perspective views of the two locking devices, one of which is adaptedto serve as a disher scraper. r
i In the drawings 1 denotes an ice-box or chest containing ice and salt 2 within which my improved packing can for ice cream or the like is arranged. In the present embodiment of the invention my can consists of two half sections 3 each pf which is of substantially semi-cylindrical form having their ilat faces opposed to and in contact with each otl1er,-but it will be understood that three, four or more can sections may be employed instead of only two as shown inthe drawings. These can sections are arranged in a perforated jacket a of substantially cylindrical form which serves to space the ice from. contact with the can sections 8 so that they may be readily removed and replaced without removing the ice. To retain the jacket or cylinder in the ice, stop projections' or arms 5 are provided on its outer surface to be attached to a frame in the ice box and thereby anchor it. These stop arms 5 are preferably in the form of angle plates riveted or otherwise secured to the jacket at intervals around its lower portion.
For the purpose of retaining the can sections 3 within the'jacket or cylinder 4 and prevent them from floating in the salt water which surrounds them, I provide two removable and adjustable locking devices 6, 7,
on the opposite sides of the upper portion of the 'jacket l for engagement with said can sections. "These devices are similar in construction each being'formed from a metal strip bent upon itself at its upper end to form a hook 8 which has two prongs 9 to enter the can sections 3 on opposite sides of their straight contacting inner walls. If
desired, the hook portion of the device 7 may be made comparatively broad as shown at 10, and bent at an angle of l5 so that said device, when in position in the jacket 4:, may be used as ascraper to scrape ice cream from a disher scoop or similar devicei constructing the device in this manner it serves both as a .lock for the cans and as a stationary scraper blade across which the ice cream disher maybe drawn to level the disher or scoop and thereby prevent waste or oversmeasure. The ice cream removed by the scraper blade falls back into the cans. The lower ends or shanks 11 ofthe devices 6, 7 are slotted longitudinally as shown at 12 to receive clamping bolts 13 arranged in apertures in thejacket l and having thumb nutsll on their outer threaded ends. The
lower portions of the shanks 11 are curved longitudinally so that when the bolts are loosened and the device pulled upwardly their hook shaped upper-ends will be swung upwardly and outwardly away from the can sections.
15 denotes a cover shaped to lit over the jacket 4 andhaving a depending surrounding flange lG to receive the open top ofthe perforated jacket 4. The opposite sides of the flange 16 have offset portions 18 to receive the lockingdevices 6, 7, as clearly shown in the drawings. This cover must be used on the-cans when the ice-box is packed with ice in order to prevent salt and water from entering the can sections.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention provides a simple and practical ice cream packing can especially adapted for use at soda fountains and ice cream. saloons and the like, Where it is necessary to keep different kinds or flavors of ice cream and ices. The use of the invention will eliect a saving both in salt and. ice and also an economy in space since two or more kinds of ice cream may be kept in a single ice-box.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is l. The combination of a can, a spacing jacket to receive the same, a can-retaining member having a shank secured to the j acket, and a hook-shaped upper end to take over the upper edge of the can, said hook-shaped upper end of the member having its portion within the can enlarged to form a scraper blade.
2. The combination of a foraininous spacing jacket, can sections arranged in said jacket, and a locking device upon the jacket and adapted to takeover the upper edges of both of the can sections to retain them in the jacket. 3. The combination of a foraminous spacing jacket, can sections arranged in said jacket, and a locking device adjustably mounted on the jacket and having spaced hook-shaped portions to take over the upper edges of both of the can sections to retain them in the jacket.
4. The combination of a foraminous spacmg acket, can sections arranged in said jacket, a locking device havinga shank mounted on the jacket and having spaced hook-shaped portions to take over the upper edges of both of the cansections, said hookform scraper blades. 7
In testimony whereof I hereunto afi'ix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' LOUIS H. SGHECK.
