Description

O. J. HAWKINS.
RACK.
APPLICATION FILED FEB.19,1909.
938,854. Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
aareizce J M112 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE J. HAWKINS, 01? LARNED, KANSAS.
RACK.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE J. Haw- [{INS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larned, in the county of Pawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to racks, and is adapted for use in laundries, or as a display rack for merchandise, and in its preferred form is especially constructed and adapted for the support of heavy articles, such as carriage robes and rugs.
A further object of this invention is the construction of a rack whereby it can be secured to the floor and supported solely thereby, obviating the necessity of providing means for securing it to a wall, also constructed in such manner that it is applicable to corners of rooms.
The objects I attain by the means described in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device fitted to the corner of a room, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a section of floor upon which are mounted the posts 2, 3, said posts being braced apart by the horizontal braces 4L, and the diagonal braces 5, forming a rigid standard. Projecting from and secured to the post 2, are the brackets 6, preferably formed of strap metal, to which are secured one end of the horizontal supports 7, 8, their other ends being secured to the post 8, thereby forming a triangular structure for corners. Pivotally mounted upon the supports 7 are the hanger arms 9, their free ends being pivotally supported by the rods 10, which have a pivotal connection with the support 8, the said rods 10 being formed at their lower ends with shoulders 11, which form bearings upon the support and obviate the use of securing nuts.
To facilitate the use of this rack for the support of heavy articles, such as carriage robes and rugs, it is necessary to strengthen Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
Serial No. 478,897.
the hanger arms 9 so that portion of the weight is taken from the rods 10, and this is accomplished by providing on both sides of the rear end of the hanger. arms, metal reinforcingplates 12, which extend over a portion of the length of said arms, said plates 12 being secured at one end by the pivot bolt 13, and at the other end by a rivet or bolt 14.
To secure and support the rack upon the floor foot brackets 15 are provided, and to further brace the structure and prevent its tilting, back braces or legs 16 having their upper ends secured to the posts, and their lower ends secured to the floor.
From the foregoing description it can be plainly seen that a strong and durable structure is provided, thoroughly braced in an upright position, capable of being mounted without wall support, and particularly adapted for the support of heavy articles, and use in corners.
As shown in Fig. 2, the rack is placed in the corner of a room without the back braces, it being understood that the use of these braces can be dispensed with as desired.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A rack embodying a standard comprising vertical posts braced apart in parallel rela tion, an upper and lower bracket mounted to one of the posts in vertical alinement, supporting bars secured to the opposite posts and to the outer ends of said brackets, thereby forming a triangular supporting frame, hanger arms pivotedly secured to the upper support, brace rods pivotedly attached to the lower support and engaging the free ends of the hanger arms, foot brackets one side of the standard beneath the hanger arms-and legs on the other side of the standard connected to the top of the posts and extending downwardly at an angle and in alinement therewith to rest upon the floor.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
