ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application fi led November 25, 1908. Serial No. 464,503.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Terms N. MooDY, citizen of the United States, residing at South Boston, in the county of Halifax and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a device to hold a curtain over a bed, to hang between the pillows and the sleepers, so that the persons may lie facing each other and not get each others breath.
The object of the invention is to prevent the transmission of contagious diseases and to promote health by the prevention of infection.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as applied to a bed Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective showing the block for holding the curtain rod; Fig. 3 is a front view.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a hook adapted to engage over the top rail of the head of a metal bed or over the upper edge of the head of a wooden bed, and this may be provided with a thumb screw 7 for holding it in place. Depending from this hook is a support which may consist of a single rod, or of an extensible rod consisting of a tubular part 8 and a rod 9 slidable in the tube, and held in place by a thumb screw 10. This extensible device will allow the invention to be adjusted to fit any bed. At the lower end the rod 9 is provided with a block 11 having a hole 12 therein and notches 13 in the top of the block adjacent the hole. One of the notches is located in front of the hole and the others on opposite sides thereof. A curtain rod 14 is provided with a depending pivot or finger 15 at the inner end, which fits in the hole 12 and which may be turned therein. A curtain 16 is suspended from the rod.
When the rod is turned to lie in the front notch, the curtain will hang down between the pillows of the bed and form a shield to prevent the breath of one person passing to the other. By swinging the rod until it engages in one of the side notches the curtain will hang against the head of the bed out of the way, and the bed may be used as usual, and if necessary for this latter purpose the rod 9 may be pushed. up to raise the curtain above the pillows.
This simple device will be found Very useful in connection with such diseases as tuberculosis where the isolation of a sufferer is desirable. 4
The device may be modified in various ways within the scope of the invention, not being limited. to the exact embodiment shown and described.
I claim:
An attachment for a bed, comprising a rod having means at its up or end to attach the same to the head of a edstead, a block attached to the lower end of the rod and provided with a bearing and notches in front of and at the side of said bearing, a swinging rod having a pivot at its inner end mounted in said bearing, and a curtain suspended from said swinging rod.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES N. MOODY. Witnesses:
W. W. HODGES, .A. F. FAULKNER.
