Laim Patent' No. 92,947, zaad July 27, '1869.
IMPROVEMENT 1N BEE-Hrvns.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Hmm FmsoN, of Monongahela Oity, in the county of Washington, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Bee- Hive; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to'make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part lof this specification.
Figure 1 is a ont view of my improved bee-hive, part being bro en away to show the construction.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line :c iig. 3. l
Figure 3 is a, side View of the same, part being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to Afurnish an improved bee-hive, which shall be so lconstructed and arranged as to not only adapt it to the natural habits of the bees, but also allowallfits parts to be conveniently and successively taken away; and
It consists i'n the construction and combination of the various partsv of the hive, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the bottom board of the hive. B are the end boards of the lower part of the hive, the lower edges of whichA are screwed or otherwise se curely attached to said boardfA. 'Io the .in ner sides of the end boards B arel attached interior boards, b1, .of a little less height than the outer boards B, so as to form'ledges for the projecting ends of the top bars of the comb-frames C to rest on. i
D are the side boards. of the lo'w'er part of .the hive, which are connected with the bottom' board A and end boards B by dowel-pins, as shown'in iig. 1.'
" To the upper 'edges of the side boards D are hinged the outer edgesof -th'e halves of thetop board E,
which also `forms the bottom of the' upper part of A the hive.'
The adjacent edges of the parts of the top board E are connected to each other vby hooks and staples, as shown in g. 1, so as to confine the top. board E and side boards D securely to the end boards B.'
rIhe top,.E, has holes, el, formed throughit to give the bees free access to the upper parts of the hive.
The top board E hasl also other openings, e, formed through it, covered with perforated plates or tine wire gauze, to permit av free circulation of air.
In the lower edge of the front end board B is formed -an opening, b2, to give the bees access to the hive.
G are the side boards, and rH are the top boardsoi I the upper part of the hive, which are constructed, and l secured in place by dowel-pins and hooks, in the same mannelas the side and top boards D and vE of the lower part, except that the top boards H have no holes or openings formed through them.
The upper part of the hive is divided, longitudinally, into two compartments, by a detachable partition, I, the ends' of which enter vertical grooves in the inner surfaces of the end boards F, or of the interior boards lattached to said end boards.
In one of the compartments oi' the upper part of the hive, formed by the. partition I, are placed the removable. honey-boxes J, which may be formed with glass sides in the ordinary manner.
' In the'other compartment of said hive are placed.
the comb-frames K, with the projecting ends of their 4 top lbars'resting upon the upper edges of the inner end boards of said part. Having thus described my invention,
What'I claimas new, and desire to secure by Let` ters Patent, is-
l The construction of the removable side and half:` vltop of the upperand lower sections, (either or both,) in, such' manner that said side and half top, when united, either rigidly or by a hinged connection, may be removed together, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.`
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 9th day of March, 1869.
HIRAM FILSON.
Witnesses Cms. HEZZNER, J B. ELnLEY.
