ALBERT H. KELLY, Ol"
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
BILL-FILE.
Application filed July To all whom it 'may concern:
Be 1t known that I, ALBnR'r H. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake y and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a bill tile that will allow a bill placed therein to be shifted from its position as filed, to another' herein referred to as the posting position; and to also provide a lock for said tile, so that a bill can not be tiled thereon, or its relative position changed as to other bills, without unlocking the tile. jects l attain by my invention that is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar figures of reference indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is an isometric vie\ a section on line w, al, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. el is a plan of the bottom of the post base, showing the locking parts. Fig. 5 is a section of the inter-locking of the posts. Fig. 6 is a section of the lower portion of the movable posts.
The base 1, is made of any light material such as wood, papier mch, or metal; a portion of the central part 2, is cut away to receive the locking parts, and from this cut 2 to one end or edge is provided a ferruled hole 3, within which is placed the shifting statf t, of the lock. Covering cut 2, is provided a post base 5, that is secured to the base 1, by screws 6. To this base 5, and near the corners thereof are perpendicular-ly and rigidly attached two posts 7, the upper ends of which have a centrally located hole S. Vithin the other corners of the post base 5, are fitted the axially and vertically movable posts 9, that are so iitted in the base 5, that they have unlimited axial motion but a limited vertical motion, and are provided near the bottom with a circumferential cut or channel 10. The upper portion of said posts 9 are bent, preferably in a curve, and the ends reduced so that they may be inserted in the holes S, of the posts 7. The curved parts of posts 9 are flattened vertically at 11, so that the flattened parts have the thickness and edge of a table knife, the purpose of which will be more fully eX- plained hereinafter.
On the under side of the post base 5 is secured, by the pivot 12, the pivoted spring latch 13, to one end of which is attached Specication of Letters Patent.

the shifting stattl 4. As a brace and stay ttor the bottom of the rigid posts T. and secured to the post base 5 is a bar 1G, and secured thereto and between it and the piv- 1, oted spring latch 13, is a spring 15, which l keeps the parts of pivoted spring latch 13, l within the eut or channel 10, of the posts 9 l when so desired, and thus prevents any vertical motion while so situated.
inserted in the the locking of The end The key reduced ends of posts 9 are i holes S of the rigid posts 7,
the posts 9 securely locks the tile. of the shifting staff ztis threaded. lll has an enlarged section 19 A and an inner axially located threaded hole l therethrough` extending into the key 141;. The bill, paper or sheet '17, has cut or t punched near one edge two holes Q0 of sutiit cient size to receive freely, the posts. .\.nd about one inch away, and parallel to the Iedge of the paper is cut or punched two similar holes 1S, each set of holes being conl uected by a slit or shear eut from hole 19 to hole 2t). l To unlock the tile and place bills thereon, the key 14- is inserted into the ferrulcd hole 3, the threads within the end of the key 1-t t engage the threads on the end of the shifting staff 4t, and a few turns of thc key will cause the enlarged section 19, of the key `tt to come in contact with the ferrule of the hole 3. Then the coi'itinuation of the turning of the key will draw the shifting stalll laterally and the edge of the pivoted spring llatch 13 will be drawn outy of the channel l 10 of the posts 9, and 'flex the spring 15, releasing the posts 9 so thatv they can be moved enough vertically and axially, so that the reduced ends of the posts 9 can be removed from the holes 8. The paper 17, can then be placed on the posts T by slipping the holes 18 in the paper, over the posts T, thus giving the tiling position. lVheu the desired number of sheets or bills have been placed on the tile, the reduced ends of the y posts 9 are inserted into the holes S of the posts T, and the key 1"l-. is removed from the l shifting stadV1 4t; the tension of the spring 15 l causes the edge of the pivoted spring latch y 1?) to enter the cut or channel 10 of the posts 9, and securely locks the tile. The sheets or lbills can be shifted from the position as t filed in holes 1S to the posting position by raising the sheets or bills to the flattened part 11 of the posts 9, where the knife edged partI allows the shifting from hole 1S tio hole Then the aty one cud,
Q0, without injury to thempaper. The sheets or bills can be used on' p'osts 9 as shown' in Fig. l or on posts 7. The tension of the spring 15 keeps the file locked until unl locked, by its particular key. The size of the ferruled hole, the cut otl the threads on the shifting staff and the key, and their relative lengths can be used to vary the lock. t Having thusl'describedmy invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent* *Y l. In a bill tile the combination of, two posts having a cent1-ally located holev in the top of each postand secured to a base, with two axially and vertically movable posts adjustably secured` to *saidy bas-e, andV having their upper portions curved and flattened and vwhose upper ends are reduced to enter the hole in the top ot the first mentioned posts, and a spring, aA pivoted spring latch attached toone Vend of said spring,` a threaded shifting staff secured toI said pivoted 4spring latch, andan axially inner threadedhkey, whose threads mesh with the threads on said shifting statt, y
2. Ina bill ile, .the combination of a sheet of paper having two sets of holes, each vset connected vby aeslit, .and two axially and vertically movable posts whose upperl ends are curved, and a portion ot the curvetlattened, which posts are adjustably attached Vto a base, and which posts have a circumferential cut near the bot-tom, with two posts rigidly securedV tosaid base and whose upper ends are tittedto receive tl eends of the rst mentioned posts, r`a pivoted, spring latch secured to the under side of said base, aV shifting statt, and a spring secured to said spring latch. n n v d 3. In a bill lile, the combination of a sheet of paper having'y twol holes therethrough, each hole formed by two circular holesconnected by a cut,V andV two axially and verti- 'c'ally movablefposts adjustably ,attached to a base, a out near the 'bottom of said posts,
with two posts perpendicularly secured to tionedl said base, whose upper ends are fitted to engage with the curved portion of the lirstmentioned posts, a pivoted spring latch secured to the under side ot said base and litte'd to engage the cut in the axially and vertically movable posts, a threaded shifting statt' attached to said pivoted spring latch, a spring for said latch, vand a key with an axially located threaded hole therein.
4. Ina bill tile consisting of a base, having a ferruled hole therein, a key with an axially looted threaded hole therein, a shifting statt threaded to engage the threads of said key, a pivoted latch connected with said shifting statt, a spring attached to said pivoted latch, two axially and vertically movablerposts adjustably secured to said base, a circumferential channel near the bottoni of said posts, two posts perpendicularly secured to said base whose'upper ends are fitted to receive the ends of the lirst menposts, as and for the purposes described. Y d ,I 5. The combination of a sheet ot paper having two holes therethrough, each hole formed by two circular holes connected by a slit, and two axially and vertically movable 'posts having their upper portions curved, with ltwo posts perpendicularly secured to 1a base and whose upper ends engage the ends ot the first mentioned posts, a pivoted spring latch attached to the under side of said ba'sea threaded shifting statt attached to said spring latch, a spring for said latch, and a key with an inner threaded ,hole therein whose threads mesh with the threads on said shifting statt. y
VIn testimony whereofl I have affixed my signature in presenceot' two witnesses.
