CHARLES J. NELSON AND OLAF OSTLIN, OF MAYWOOD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS T0 AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y A (.ORI-ORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
STATIONARY CAN -DOUB LIE-SE AMIN G MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 31, 1908.
Patented June -1, 1909. Serial No. 413,537.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, (7i-iAnLEsJ. NELSON and OLA-F OsTLiN, citizens of the United States, residing in Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stationary Can-Double-Seaming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stationary can double seamin r machines.
a stationary can double 'a simple, eliicient and durable construction, having a continuously rotating seaming head, carrying a plurality of seaming rollers, and in which the lower reciprocating can holder or chuck may be operated by a foot lever or treadle, and the mechanism for operating or advancing the seaming rollers against the can be automatically set in operation by depression of the foot lever or treadle, and in which, after the seaming ope eration on each can is completed, the seaming rollers or tools will be automatically withdrawn from the .can independent of the action of the operatoflsfoot on the foot lever or treadle, whether it is kept too long depressed or not.
The invention further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stationary can-double seaming machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section on line 33 of Fig; 1. Fig. 4 on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section on line 5-5 of Fig. I. Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of a part hereinafter to be described. Fig.7 is a detail section on line 7-,7 of Fig. 11. Fig.
8 is a detail elevation, partly in vertical section, of one of the seaming roller levers. Fig. 9 is a plan view of same. detail horizontal section on line 10 10 of Fig. l, the section line 1010 being also indicatedon Fig. 5. Fig- 11 is a detail section on line-1l-l1 of Fig. Fig. 12 is a detail section on line l2----]2ol Fig. Fig. 13 is a detail cross sectional view showing the clutch. Fig. 14 is a detail end view of the parts shown in Fig. 8
stem B is furnished with a spring 12 The ob ect of the invention is to provide seaming machine of- Fig. 10 is a' Fig. 15 is a detail perspective view of the clutch device, hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Arepresents the frame of the machine, B is the lower reci rocating 'qan holder chuck and C a feed tab e for the cans, surrounding. the chuck B. .The chuck B'has a shank b, fitting in a suitable socket b in a reciprocating stem or rod B by which the chuck B is moved up and down. The to give a yielding support to the lower can chuck.
The stem B is operated or moved up and down as required to chuck the can against the opposing stationary or non-rotating chuck I), by means of a foot lever or treadle E operating through the sliding connecting link E having a spring E and provided with a pawl E adapted to engage-a block or projection E on the link or slide E which is *pivotally connected to. the arm E of a rock shaft E", having an arm E engaging a block or connection I) on the chuck stem B. The pawl E is furnished with a spring E and with a cam face E which engages a roller E on the stationary frame, and thus disengages the pawl E from the projection E" and thus permits the lower chuck B to return again to its normal position by its own gravity after the seaming operation has been completed, the operator effecting-this by simply giving a slight additional impulse to the foot lever or treadle-E against the tension of the spring E.
F is a continuously upon which the seaming rollers G seaming roller levers G are mounted, and by which the same are carried rapidly around the can. The seaming head F is secured to its hollow shaft or rotating sleeve by a screw threaded cap F to which cap said head F is attached by screw bolts, as shown in Fig. 11, and said sleeve is continu- 1 d to a stationary stem or shaft 1) which is j secured at its upper end to the frame of the "machine, and which is adapted to be ad- 1 justed up and down by means of an adjust- 5 ing screw (1 i The seaming. roller levers G are all in the is removably connected by screw threads disengaging rotating seamin head- I a andously driven as required by means of a bevel gear j thereon, which meshes with a bevel 50 other for actuating the finishing rollers form of rock shafts, and are pivotally connected to the seaming head and are preferably four in number, as it is preferable to use two pair of seaming rollers, two form.- ing rollers G and two finishing rollers G, each pair being arranged diametrically opposite so that both forming rollers and both finishin rollers will engage the cans at diathe arms 9 and g being also furnish ed with interengaging devices g and 9 The interengaging devices 9 9 preferably consistbf aplurality of notches on the one part and a rojection on the other part adapted to take into one of the notches on said first mentioned art. The adjustable member of the rock siaft arm upon which the seaming roller G is directly carried, thus enables the machine to be quickly set for operation upon cans of different dian'ietcrs. Each of the rock shafts G is also furnished with an u per operating arm g carrying roller g w 'ch engages a continuously rotating cam H or 1-1 by which the seaming roller is operated or advanced against the seamii'ig flanges of the can and can cover, and maintained in position thereagainst during the seaming operation. The operating arms 9 which actuate the two finishing rollers G are fur-' nished with yielding extensions or supplemental arms upon which the. cam engaging rollers g are directly mounted, the two arms 9 and 9 being yieldingly connected together by a pivot pin g, operating in con junction with a rubber or other spring or cushion g interposed between the bent arms g on the arms 9* and g on the supplemental arm g". This causes the finishing rollers G to be forced and maintained against-the seam with a yielding pressure, and aids materially in producing .hermetics ally tight double seams.
The operating cams Hand H one for actuating the forming rollers G G, and the G G, are both secured in the required relative position to each other on the continuously rotating cam sleeve H which surand which rotates continuously, at times with or at the same speed as the seaming head sleeve, and at other times at a differential speed, preferably a slightly faster one, so as to bring the cams into action against the seaming roller rock shafts. H makes-,say, thirteen revolutions to twelve revolutions of the seaming head sleeve when said cam sleeve is being independently driven by the seaming roller actuating mechanism.
Preferably the cam sleeve The cam sleeve ,H is furnished with a bevel gear 71', which meshes with. a bevel gear It on the shaft 71' which is furnished with a loose spur gear 71 that meshes with a spur gear l1 fast on the driving shaft K, the spur gears 72 72 having a differential number of teeth, so that when the differential gear 71 is clutched to the shaft l2, said shaft will be driven at a different speed from the shaft K, and thus cause the am sleeve ll to rotate at a different speed from the seaming head shaft F, and thereby cause the cams to force the seaming rollers inward against the can, and maintain the same properly in operative relation until the seaming operation is completed.
The differential gear 71 is furnished with clutch pins or members 71", which are adapted to be engaged by the teeth of a sliding clutch 71 on the shaft It", and which is operated by a bent clutch lever l1 pivoted to the frame at 7N, and having a spring h" by which it is automatically retracted and the differential gear 71 unclutehed from the shaft 14: when the seaming operation for each can is completed. The lever 71 is cormected by a link 72 with the arm 15 of the rock shaft E The differential gear 72. is antmnaticallv clutched and unclutched from the cam sleeve. operating shaft 71% at the completion of each seaming operation by m sans of a stop cam M on the intermittently rotating shaft M, said cam having a notch in engaging a roller 11" on the loch-arm 71 of the clutch operating lever 7W. The shaft M. of the stop cam M makes one complete revolution for each seaming cycle period of ol'icration for each can. The locking arm 71 is withdrawn from the stop cam M so as to release the sam and permit it to begin tou'otate at the beginning of each seaming cycle or period, by opera tion through link 71" of the clutch lever 71 which moves the clutch member h into cngagement with. the clutch member 717 on the differential gear h? The stop cam M isintcrmittently operated as required, by means of a pulley K on the driving shaft K and belt K running on a pulley n of the worm shaft N which is furnishcd with a worm n that meshes with a worm gear an loose on the stop cam shaft M and which is furnished with a clutch member m adapted to engage a. sliding.
lution of the groove clutch sleeve m which is fast on the shaft M The sliding clutch pin or member 111? has a notch iii to engage the clutch disengaging device m The clutch disengaging device m has a stem m furnished with a spring m operating to hold liZ) iii
said device at normally in the annulargroove m of the clutch sleeve m 0 retract the clutch disengaging device m and permit the clutch pin m to be moved by its spring m into engagement with the clutch member m and the shaft M thus clutched to its operating worm m, the stem m is furnished with a notch or projection m ada ted. to be engaged by a safety trip device 1 mounted on the operating arm P, which is connected by a link l? withthe clutch lever h, and which trip device P is furnished with a. spring 1) for holding it in position, and with a pin p having a roller 71 adapted to engage a stationary cam 72" on the frameof the machine so thatthe safety trip device will be automatically disengaged clutch disengaging by the operationof the clutch lever through the foot treadle after the clutch disengaging device has been. withdrawn and the stop cam started to revolve, so that the clutch disengaging device can return to its operative position in the groove m of the clutch sleeve m and thus disengage the clutch when the stop cam M has completed its revolution and the seaming operation on the can is finished, and this indepen dent of whether or not the operator keeps the foot lever or treadle E depressed or not.
To enable the cam sleeve H to rotate continuously with the seaieii'ng head sleeve when thediil'erential gear k is unclutched from its shaft h and to rotate at the same speed with said seaming head sleeve atsuch time/while at other times it is free to be rotated at a diffcrent or higher speed when said. dii'ierei'itial gear k is clutched to said shaft 72 a movable or pawl connection R R is provided between the seaming head, and the cam sleeve H, the same preferably consisting of one or morespring pawls it on one member and one 01' more slots as R on the other member, the pawls having inclined ends so as to freely permit the cam or cam sleeve to rotate faster than the seaming head, while preventing the same from rotating at a slower speed. This yielding or pawl connection between the seaming head and cam sleeve thus enables the one part to be driven at a slightly different s eed from 'the other, as required,
whileat tie same time causing the two to always rotate continuously, and both rotate at the same speed excepting when the cam sleeve is independently operated intermittently as required by the diflerential gear k The stopcam shaft and the worm and worm gear for driving it, the clutch for, connecting and disconnecting the worm gear with said shaft, and the safety trip device thus constitute an. automatic controlling mechanism for connecting and disconnecting the (.liil'erent-ial gear with the seaming tool'operating cams at the beginning of each seaming cycle or period and at the and disconnected after stop and start completion thereof. And as this dii'l'errmtial gear controlling mechanism is itself set in o )eration through link 71/ by movement of t e foot lever or treadle to,chuck the ran against the upper or stationary chuck, the sean'iing tools are thus brought into operationthe instant tin can is properly chucked the seaming head makes the required series or number of re V0- lutions for each seaming cycle or scanning 0)81'J.tl0ll on each can. The stop cam and t e locking arm on the clutch lever which engages the stop cam serves to insure the stopping of the differential gear controlling mec ianism at the proper time independent of the period the operator may keep his foot upon the foot lever or treadle, the safety trip device causes the clutch device to be immediately restored to operative position entirely independent of the period the foot lever may be kept de ressed. e seaming rollers and seaming ro ler operating cams on the continuously rotating seaming head are thus always kept in proper registry or position to receive a new can and to discharge or release a seamed one, and no particular skillis therefore required to properly operate the machine,
