Description

'dnited guette JGNA'II-IAN L; DEVOL, OF PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 91,921, lated .Time 29, 1869.
IMPROVED IRONING-TABLE AND CLOTHIEISfDRIER.v
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom it lmay concern,.- g
Be it known that I, J @NATHAN-L. DuvoL, of Parkersburg, in the county of Wood, and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and usefui Improved 1roning'1able; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of one side.
Figure 2 is anelevation of the opposite side.
Figure. 3 is a transverse vertical section.
The saine letters iu all the figures represent the same ports.
My invention relates `to an ironing-table,'for domestic or laundry-purposes;l and It consists inattaching to the table a hinged top, and folding racks, which maybe folded under the lid, or extended-to support the clothes which halve been or are intended to be ironed.
In the annexed drawings I have represented a table, with a cover, A, hinged upon one side.
IVheu the arms are folded under the cover, the table vmay be used for any ordinary domestic purpose.,
The top of the Vtablewhen shut down, is held in place by a spring-catch, B, which catches into a stapie in the under side of the top, or by other convenient and equivalent device.
IVhen the table is to be used for ironing, the top is raised, turning upon its hinges, and the end racks O and C are turned up, so as to stand in the position shown. l
'Ihese racks are pivoted at one end to the upper parts of the legs,`at the corner of the table; and in order that they `may` be turned outwardly, so as to stand in their inclined position for use, notches must be cut in the end boardsot' the table, which will support the racks in proper position.
At the side of the table, opposite to the hinges of the table-top, I attach 'another rack, D, in the same manner, which, when the racks are folded into the body of the table, as shown by the red lines in Eg. 2, folds below the end racks, it being pivoted on a lower plane than the racks, and consequently the notches in the side board of the table must be cut deeper than those in the end boards.y
In order that the side racks may be given the saine elevation as the end racks, it must be constructed in two sections. 4
The rst or lower rack D is pivoted to the table, and the second or upper sectionV is attached thereto. 4 This I do by extending the end pieces of the rack, and cutting therein slots, as shown in iig. 3. The upper round of the rack D passes through this slot, and the lower ends of end pieces are formed with hooks or recesses toreceive the next round below the upper round in the rack D.. The length -of the slots must be sufficient to permit the upper rack to be folded under the lower one into the body of the table, and toaliow the hooks to be brought down to catch the round by which they are heid when the upper rack is extended.
What I claim as my inventionI and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In combination with a table having a movable top, the racks C C', attached to the table, substantially in the manner-set forth.
2. In combination with the rst'section of the side rack I), the second rack D', constructed with slotted end pieces, and arranged in relation to the first rack, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specitication, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. L. DEVOL.
