Letters Patent No. 91,832, (lated .Tune 29, 1869.
IMPROVED ROCKIN G- AND RECLININGr-CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same..
To all whom it may concern Vmy invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same.
My invention refers to a new mode of' making rocking-chairs, so as not .to rock direct on the floor or carpet, and therebylesseu the wear and teal' of said floor oiV carpet, but also for the mode of making Ait into a stationary reclining and easy-chair, when so needed.
a a is a frame, held together by the rods b b.
This frame has two corners, c c, intended as turning or tipping-points for the rocking.
The support or frame a, ft is connected with the .rockers d tl by means of two bolts, c e, that have,in
their lower ends, eyes ff, playing into slot-holes in the.
frame a a, and affixed to the said frame by means of pins going through the frame and the eyes.
On the upper end of these eye-bolts c c, are nuts,
g g, between which and the .rockers d Il, are spiral springs, h, by which means `the rocking is facilitated.
The said nuts g g maybe screwed up or down. so as to adjust the strength ofthe spring It.
Under the rockers l d, are fastened elastic coverings, i i, made ot' India rubber, leather, felt, or other suitable material.
The advantages gained by these elastic coverings are, to give a-perfect ease t'o the rocking, and also to make the chair perfectly noiseless when in motion.
The rockers cl d are also provided with screws, k k, one on each side of the bolt c, screwing through the rockers, for the purpose of making the rocking-chair into a stationary (or nearly so) easy-chair. As will be seen, when these screws lt k are screwed down far enough to meet the frame au, the rocking is limited, and the chair may, in this position, be kept nearly stationary, without much rocking to either side.
Having thus described the nature and construetio of my invention,
I wish to secure by Letters Patent, andciainil. Connecting the rockers (l d tothe frame a a, by means of bolts ce, springs hh, and nuts g g, as and for the purpose herein described.
2. In combination with the above, the adjustable screws la Il: and the cornerst1 c, for the ,purposes set forth.
JACOB EDSON.
