Specification of Letters Potent.
Application fried October 1S, 19%. Serial No. ltl.
To all whom 'it mary concer-fn:
Be it known that i, 'Lesioni J. SPAULDING, citizen of the United States, residing et Painesviiie, in the county of halte end State e oi Sirio, here invented certain new and use- 'iuivaiinproveinents in Anticreeping Devices for Raiiroeiti'ioiis, of which the following is o s eoi'cation. l
.n the operation oi railways and articw leriy those employing e double traer or in which the ex yess or travel is in one direction, it hes been discovered that the crossing, switches and like adjunctive parts are throu'n out of filineinent, this being due to the ereep- 5 ing oi the raiis or tendency of the saine to follow the train.
Vl'he present invention provides simple and eil'ective nieans for guarding against the objectionable features aforesaid, said lneans 0 consisting of stops ot' such construction as te be readily applied to the foot or base oi a raii without in any manner weakening the saine, end which will obtain a iirrn grip thereby preventing nossibie displacement, said Ineens cooperating with a tie.
For a full understanding of the'invention and' the merits thereof and aise to acquire e knowledge of the details of construction, of the means for eii'ecting` theI result, reference is to be had to the folowing description and accompanying drawings; 'A
While the invention may be o dented to diilierent forms and conditions byy changes in the structure snd'ininor detailswithout departing from the spiritor essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l. is a top pian View of n section ,of railway embodying the invention.. vFig. 2 is n transverse sect-ion on the iine .t of Fig. l, Fig'. 3 is' it ivierspective-viewiol the spanner. Fig. L is adetaii perspective View of the clamp which cooperates with. the spanner. Fig. 5 is a: front View ot the ehnnp and a section oi the spanner showing more clearly the relation of the ports.
Correspoiuling andllike ports ere referred to in the followiiw descriptionv and indicated in ali the views ot the y iinnings by the saine roter-ence einifructers.
'The device or antinated as a raiistop since' cooperate with the tie to g nal movement or"tiie raii. This rei consists et n spixnner i end e, (derni) E, the
ention is to lon itudistop' ogee form.
Spanner l having t latter being secured to the Spanner oy ineens of a boit 3. The Spanner consists of ober or plate having heolrs [i end 5 et opposite ends, an end portion ot the Spanner being deiiected or inclined as indicated at t3, seid end being designed to receive the cierne 2. ih-e nook i engages over one edge oi tLhe foot or bese of' the rail 7, the clamp 2 binding egsinst the opposite edge of seidioot or bese end engeging with the hook 5 at the other end oi' the spanner. it is to be understood that the s )anner 7 is suiliciently stout to witi'istend the strain to which subjected Whenin serifd ice. rhe spsnner i is pieecd beneath the rail and is adapted to engage with a side of e tie 8 of the rond bed, therebj,T preventing creeping or longitudinei movement oi the rail.
The clamp 2 consists of frame, the seme comprising side pieces 9 and aconneeting web i() forming e bese. The edge portion 1i of euch side piece Q is curved and constitutes a com which binds the edge of the foot or base oi the rail. The side pieces 9 project below the lower end of the connecting web or bese i() and embrace opposite edges of the spennor 1 and project below the seine so as to obtain e. urchase against a side of the tie 8 with Whicli the stop cooperates. ,The connecting web or brace 10 is ap roxirnateiy The'iower end of t e brace 10 engages the hook 5. The upper portion of the brace 10 has an opening l2 through which. the boit 3 passes, seid bolt likewise passing through en opening i3 neer the end ofthe e hook 5. Y
When the erts are assembled and placed in position tne standard i extends beneath the rail sind the hoot: 4 engages with the Jioot thereof upon one side sn the lower end oi the brace i() engages with the hook 5, the cern edges 1i 'oit tbe side ieces 9 bearing egainst the edge of the rail toot upon thev opposite side.A Upon tightening the bolt 3 or thenut 14 thereon, the u per end of the brace l() is drawn downwor thereby forcing the edges of the side ieces 9 into biting engagement' withvthe e ge of the rail foot, to such en extent as to prevent possible slip ping of the properiy positioned and secured.
it is to be understood that the device is ettecned to the foot ci the rail end located so s to engage with s side et the tie 8, to pre- Vent movement of the roil in the direction of travel oi the trein.
sten or enti-cree ing device when iesy Une or inore stopl may be employed and arranged to engage with n number of ties, thereby insuring stability of the rail and preventing possible movement thereof und disalinement of the crossing, switchesbr other parte. f
Having thus described the inyention, what is elninied as new is:
1. A rail stop comprising a Spanner having hooks at opposite ends, :L clamp cooperating with one of seid ende, said clamp comprising side pieces to embrace opposite edges of the Spanner and a. web Connecting the side pieces and 'forming a brace, the lower end of which is adapted to engage with a. hook of the spanner et the end upon which the clamp fitted.
2. A rail stop comprising e Spanner having e hook et one end, a clamp cooperating with seid hooked end and comprising side pieces, and a web connecting Suid iside pieces and forming a. brace the lower end of which engages with seid hook and the upper end heving en opening, and e bolt connecting the upper end of the clamp with the Spanner.
3. A rail. stop comprising e Spanner having n. hooked end end e. cla-mp comprising side pieces and. :t connecting web or brace, said side pieces having their edges curved to form cams, the lower end of the brace engaging with the hook of the Spanner and a bolt 'conmeeting the upper end of seid brace with the Spanner.
4. A rail stop comprising a Spanner having hooks et opposite ends and having an end portion deflected und formed with 'an opening, e clamp con'lprising side pieces and e. connecting web or brace, the lower end oi" which engages with the hook et the deflected end ol the Spanner end the upper end of said brace having an. opening, the edges of the side pieces being curved to form cams sind e ,bolt connecting the brace with the Spanner.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
