Be it known that I, MILns Townsmen, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of. Riverside and State of California, have invented anew and useful Ventilator, of which the following is a specication. This invention relates to ventilators for buildings and other structures.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a ventilator capable of being readily dpositioned in a Window or wall opening an having a screen associatedtherewith thereby to prel vent the entrance of rain, leaves, insects and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wall or window ventilator including a plurality of laterally adjustable sections'each provided with spaced slats having intereng arts thereby to permit the ventilator to e a justed to fit windows or air vents of r different sihes.
'A further object is to provide means for limiting the lateral or expansible movement of the ventilating sections, and means for retainin the screen in engagement with the slats W en said sections are adjusted.
A further object is 'to provide improved means for securing the slats in position on the sup orting frame, said slats having their free en s deflected laterally to form longitudinal strengthening lips. l

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all ofthe gures of the drawings. The improved ventilator forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a-substantially rectangular frame preferably formed in two sections 5 and`6, said sections being adjustable laterally to' iit Windows of different sizes, or air vents, when the venti.- lator is inserted in a wall. Eachsection is rovided with an end piece 7 ormed of metal and havin its adjacent lon, gitudinal edges bent later y to form paral el retaining flanges 8, the metal formin the end pieces'and ianges being bent inwar in over-lapped relation and soldered `or ot er wise secured together, as indicatedat 9. Se- .cured to the end piece 7.of each ventilator section are a plurality of spaced inclined slats '10 having their fixed ends provided with depending attachin wings or ears 11 which bear against the a jacent end piece 7 and aresoldered, riveted or otherwise rigidly preferably t secured thereto, as shown.V The lower edges of the slats 10 are bent downwardly to form li s 12 which serve to reinforce and strengthen t e slats and also to prevent the rain from beating in between the slats in rainy or inclement vweather. .The upper longltudi'nal edges of the slats on the section 6 are bent uson themselves to form guiding grooves 13 a a ted to slidably engage the over-han g gui e flanges 14 formed on the-upper e ges of the slats of the ventilator section 5 thereby to retain said slats in engagement with each other, when the sections are adjusted laterally to iit a window, wall vent or other opening. Extending' longitudinally of the ventilator at the rear face thereof is a screen also preferably formed in two sections 15 andl 16, each screen section comprising a substantially rectangular frame one edge of which is soldered or otherwise rigidly secured to the j end piece 7 of the `adjacent ventilator section as shown. The inner ends of the screen sections 15'and 16 are over-lap ed'and re#- tained in Vengagement with eac other byV means of a strap or yoke 17 secured to. the ventilator section 6 and preferably spaced from the rear face thereofl to permit the pa8- sage of the screens when adjusting the ventiv lator thereon'. The inner or fixed ends of the slats 10 are each cut away at 18 and the adjacent edge o the metal at said cut away portion inserted in a slit or kerf 19 formed in the adjacent flange 8 thereby to maintain the slats in s acedrelation to each other and also to a d additional strength and rigidity to the ventilator. As a means for limiting the lateral movement of the ventilator sections suitable rods 20 and 21 are securedy thereto with their outer ends provided with j terminal eyes or loops 23 which encircle the said frame.

Secured to the en pieces 7 of the ventilator sections are plates 25 provided with vertically disposed guide flanges 26 for engagement with'v a Win ow frame so that the ventilator It Wlll thus be seen that when the ventilator sections are ad'usted laterally to fit a Window, air vent or ot eropening the screen sections 15 and 16 will also be adjusted so as to form a complete closure for the rear face of the ventilator regardless of the adjustment of the same, thus efectually preventing the entrance of mosquitos and other insects to the interior of the room.
Attention is called to the fact that the guiding grooves not only serve to accommoate t e flanges 13 but'also serve to reinforce and strengthen the slats as well as to prevent the entrance of rain between the slats to the interior of the building or other structure.
While the device is principally designed for attachment to Windows it 1s obvious that the same may be used with equally good results as a wall 'ventilator or in connection transoms, hatch-Ways or wherever a device of this character is found desirable.
From the foregoing description it is thought that the construction and operation of the device Will be readily understood by those skilled in the art and further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.

2. A ventllator includin laterali adjustable sections having space incline slats secured thereto the longitudinal edges of which are deiiected downwardly to form longitudinally disposed reinforcing-lips, the partsY of may be adjusted vertically ofv -section and having their one section havin arts interen a 'n with the parts of the oxr section. g g
3. A ventilator includin able sections each provide with s acedinclined slats, the lower longitudina edges of which ,are deiiected downwardly to produce reinforcing lips, the slats of one section overlapping the slats of the adjacent section, a screen secured to the rear of the ventilator and adjustable laterally with the sections, and means'for limiting the lateral movement of said sections.
4. A ventilator including laterally adjustable sections each provided with an end piece flanges the Walls having laterally extendi of which are formed with spaced recesses, spaced slats carried by each section and having their inner ends cut away for engagement laterally movwith the Walls of the recesses, the parts of one l section having arts interengaging withv the parts of the ot er section, and a sectional screen combined with the ventilator and forming a closure. for one face thereof.
5. A ventilator including laterally adjustable sections spaced. slats carried by each inner ends overlapped and provided with inter-'engaging parts, a yoke secured to the rear face of one of said sections and provided with an intermediate loop,` telescopic rod sections secured to the ventilator sections and extended through said loop, and screen sections adj ustable with the ventilator sections and having their inner ends seated in the yoke.
6. A ventilator including laterally adjustable sections, spaced slats secured to one o f said sections and hafving their upper longitudinal edges bent to form guiding grooves and their lower ed es deflected downwardl to produce longitu inal reinforcing lips, simllar slats carried by the mating sectlon 'and provided with over-hanging flanges for slid- `1ng engagement with the grooves of adjacent slatsz an adjustable screen combined with the ventilator and forming a closure for one face and means for limiting the lateral thereof, movement of the slats, and screen, respectively.
