RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID H. TURNBAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail fasteners, and its object is to provide simple and inexpensive means for securing railway rails to metallic ties.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its features ofnovelty will be set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a metallic tie with a rail secured thereto by my improved fastener, the rail being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a part of a rail, the tie and the fastening means being shown partly in end elevation and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a modification. Fig. 41 is a perspective view of one of the braces shown in Fig. 8, detached, Fig. is a side elevation of a part of a tie equipped with a modified form of the rail fastener. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the tie with parts in section, showing a part of the rail in side elevation. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one member of the clamp or fastener partly broken away, and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the other vmember of the fastener.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 the numeral 1 designates a metallic railway tie of the I beam type, the flange 2 of which is formed with openings 3. l
The reference numeral 4 designates a rail resting on the tie and firmly secured thereto by clamping plates 5 arranged on opposite sides of the rail. As these clamping plates are similar in construction a description of one will suflice.
The inner end 6 of the plate overlies the base flange of the rail and is beveled on its under side to adapt it to fit closely upon said base flange of the rail, and the flat body portion is formed with bolt holes 7 from the lower ends of which depend col- 55 lars 8 beveled at their lower ends 9 to adapt them to rest flush with the beveled under surfaces 10 of the flange 2 of the tie.
The collars 8 extend through the opening 3 in the tie flange and the clamping plates are secured by bolts 11 inserted from the under side of the flange, and held by nuts 12 resting on the clamping plates. Between the heads of the bolts and the under surface of the flange are interposed washers 13 beveled on their upper surfaces to fit the beveled faces of the flange.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4: the construction is the same as above described except that each of the clamping plates is formed with an opening 14 to receive a pin 15 depending from a reinforcing brace 16. These braces are of concavoconvex form, and are arranged on opposite sides of the rail with their upper ends resting under the tread of the rail and their lower ends upon the clamping plates as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive the clamping-plate comprises a rectangular frame 17 provided at one end with a cross bar 18 beveled on its inner side 19, and at its opposite end with an overhanging flange 20 adapted to overlie the base flange of the rail 4 as shown in Fig. 5. A plate 21 is employed to secure the opposite side of the rail said plate having a beveled edge 22 fitting the beveled inner side of the cross bar 18 and recessed on the under side of its inner end as shown at 2-3 to fit over the base flange of the rail. The plate 21 is formed with openings 24 from which depend collars 25, said collars extending through openings in the flange of the tie and being beveled at their lower ends to conform to the bevel of the tie flange. The plate 21. is secured by bolts 26 and nuts 27 beveled washers 28 being interposed between the heads of the bolts and the under surfaces of the tie flange.
.The device constructed as thus described is readily applied, and affords a secure and reliable connection between the tie and rail.
I desire to call attention to the fact that the beveled washers of my rail fasteners can be dispensed with when the under side of thefiflanges 2 are straight, I having simply illustrated beveled washers to show the adaptability of my fastener to the present type of metallic tie.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. The combination with a metallic tie provided with a beveled flange formed with openings of a rail resting on said tie, a clamping plate overlying the base flange of the rail and formed with bolt holes and depending beveled collars, bolts and nuts for securing said clamping plate in place, and beveled washers interposed between the heads of the bolts and the under surfaces of the flange of the tie.
2. The combination with a metallic tie provided with a beveled flange formed with openings, of a rail resting on said tic, oppositely-disposed clamping plates beveled on their under surfaces to overlie the base flange of the rail, and formed with bolt-h oles having beveled collars depending therefrom, said collars fitting within the openings in the tie flange, bolts extending through said bolt holes, nuts for securing said bolts, and beveled washers interposed between the heads of the bolts and the beveled surfaces of the tie flange.
3. The combination with a metallic tie provided with a beveled flange formed with openings, of a rail resting on said tie, oppositely-disposed clamping plates beveled on their under surfaces to overlie the base flange of the rail, and formed with bolt holes having beveled collars depending therefrom,
said collars fitting within the openings in the flange, bolts extending through said boltholes, nuts for securing said bolts, beveled washers interposed between the heads of the bolts and the beveled surfaces of the tie flange, and reinforcing braces fitting under the tread of the rail and resting on said clamping plates.
4. The combination with a inetallie tie provided with a beveled flange formed with openings, of a rail resting on said tie eppositely-disposed clamping plates beveled on their under surfaces to overlie the base ol. the rail, and formed with bolt holes having beveled collars depending tlieretrtnn, said collars fitting within the opening in the tie flange, bolts extending tlnrough said belt holes, nuts for securing said bolts, beveled washers interposed between the heads of the bolts and the beveled surfaces of the lie flange, and reinforcing ln'aces titling under the tread of the rail and resting on said clamping plates, said braces being of concavo-convex form, and provided with depending pins fitting openings tortned in said clamping plates.
