GAS-BURNER.'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 29, 190s.
Application filed April 24, 1907. Serial No. 370,041.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK KRABAL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the folowing isa specification.
This invention relatesto improvements in gas burners for illuminating purposes and has for its object the production of'a burner thatwill become automatically closed in case the light is blown out instead of being turned out by shutting off the gas by the ordinary cock in the pi e adjacent to the burner.
A further o ject of the invention is to produce a burner that will provide greater safety against accidents from curtains, hangings -or other inflammable materials coming into contact with theflame of the burner.
With these objects in view and further objects and advantages that will appear as the nature of my invention is more fully disclosed, I have constructed the novel and use- 'ful burner herein to be described and illustrated by reference to `the accompanying drawing which shows one embodiment of my respondingly formed cup -or ase portion 4.
The cup or base portion 4, terminates below in a cylindrical portion 5, which is provided with a threaded recess 6 whereby it may be screwed to the usual threaded terminal portion of the chandelier orflxture onwhich it is to be used. The passage 7 is provided in the central portion of the cup or base to communicate with a corresponding passage 8 in the bottom of the spherical portion 3, of the body in such manner that when the body 2, is in an upright or vertical position there may be free ingress of gas from the fixture below. The upper portion of the cup or base 4, is threaded externally for the internally threaded collar 9 which serves to secure the spherical portion of the body in the corresponding portion of the cup or base, but without pressure or unnecessary friction therein.
The operation of the burner is as follows.
kcock in the fixture. p through the passages 7 and 8 to the body of the The body of the burner is set in an upright i i' position and the gas turned on at the stop- The gas then passes burner and is ignited at the tip l, in the usual manner. The body of the burner being neatly poised on its spherical portion will be easily deflected by any light pressure against its u per end, and any attempt to extinguish the ight by blowing it out will displace the upper part of the burner to the position shown by the dotted lines, thereby destroying the alinement of the passages 7 and 8 and cutting off the gas, the passage 8 being displaced as shown by dotted lines at 10. The spherical contact between the up er and lower portions of the burner is adjuste with such nicety that the up er portion will be deflectedand the gas cut off by much less violent blowing than would be re uired to extinguish the light by the breath a one. It is therefore impossible to extinguish the light without at the same time preventing any further flow of gas until the upper portion of the burner is again placed in `an upright position. From the above it is also apparent that any contact of draperies, curtains, hangings or any other thing which might become ignited from an ordinary burner would, in my improved burner, instantly .extinguish the flame and would do so in less time than would be re quired for their ignition unless they were of a very highly inammable character. This feature of safety I regard as of great value in my invention, but the collar 9 may be so iitted as to admit of being screweddown against the spherical portion 3v of the body thereby making the upper and lower portions practically integral and converting the burner substantially into one of the ordinary kind without any disadvantages on account of its special construction. A
Having now fully described one of the embodiinents in which my invention may be carried out and expressly reserving the right to any and all applications of the principle thereof, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a base portion having a hemispherical socket in its upper end, in combination with a burnery tube having a spherical lower end resting in said socket and normally held therein by gravity, said burner tube and said base portion `having ports adapted to register when the burner tube is in vertical position and to close when the same is in inclined position,
and means to prevent separation of said base and said burner tube, said means normally exerting no pressure upon the ball and socket members, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a base portion having a hemispherical socket in its upper end, in combination with a burner tube having a spherical lower end resting in said socket and normally held therein by gravity7 said burner tube and said base portion having ports adapted to register when the burner tube is in vertical position and to close when the same is in inclined position, a
collar threaded on said base portion and havl ing an inturned flange surrounding the upper' FRANK KRABAL.
