Description
3mm @twine DEVOL-SON WEAVER,
OF ANAMOSA, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 89,718, dated May 4,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVE-WELL POINT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, DEvoLsoN WEAVER, of Anamosa, in the county of Jones, and State of Iowa, have invented a new Driving-Well Point; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists of an improved point for drive-wells, the construction and arrangement of which are such that the bottom of the tube may be opened or closed at pleasure, for the purpose of admitting or eX- cluding earth and sand, it being also so constructed that when closed, water is admitted freely, while earthy matter is excluded, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawingsl Figure l represents an elevation of the point or head proper.
'igure 2, a section of the same through the line a b, g. 1
Figure 3, an elevation of the section of tube, through which the water is admitted.
Figure 4, a view of one of the ribs detached.
Figure 5, a View of the tube, partially wound with' wlre.
Figure 6, a view of the point complete.
Figure 7, a section through the line E F, iig. 6; and
Figure 8, a section through the line C D, iig. 6.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same.
The length 'of this point, from its'counection with the main tube to its extreme end, is usually about eighteen inches, but it may of course be varied, if necessary. Y
The head or point proper, A, is constructed of solid cast-iron, and is usually about three inches long.
It is provided with a ribbed shank, A', securely attached thereto, as is clearly shown in iig. l.
This shank is securely attached to the tubo-B, iig.
. 3, by means of a pin, which ispassed through it when placed iu position, the ends of which project outward, and have a limited movement in the slots bl b.
The tube B consists of a suitable piece of pipe, perforated at regular intervals, and provided with collars ateach end.
Between the rows of perforations are placed the ribs or strips Bl, as shown'in g. 5.
Whenthe tube is thus prepared, it is tightly wound with galvanized wire, B2, of from No. 10 to No. l5v size, by which means a perfect screen is obtained.
The tube B, when wound, is smaller in diameter than the head A and the main tube, by which construction itis securely protected from contact with the y is then drawn back a short distance, the head A, however, remaining fixed, being rmly held in place by adhesion.
The necessary play to accomplish this result is provided for by the arrangement of the slots b in the tube B.
By this arrangement, the bottom of the tube B is partially opened, as the shank A is grooved for this purpose;
By now operating the pump, the loose earth and sand may be all drawn into the tube and discharged out of the mouth, by which means a cavity is formed about the bottom of the tube in which the water can collect. By depressing the tube again, this opening is entirely closed, the head A fitting tightly against the bottom of tube B.
The pump is now ready for use, and no water can pass into the tube except through the wire screen.
By this construction and arrangement, a simple but desirable point is produced, it being easily constructed and very durable. a l
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The head or point A, constructed as described, and provided with a ribbed shank, A', in combination with tube B, perforated and furnished with strips B, said tube being Wound with wire, all arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
Dated April 9, 1868. i
