ERICK O. H. ERICKSON, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
MAT CII-SAFE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed March 21, 1907. Serial No. 363,707.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERICK O. H ERioKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to match safes which are provided with means whereby the matches may be expelled or delivered singly, or one by one and it has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.
l/Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of theinvention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which -will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a single delivery match safe embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 1*4 in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an end view. Fig. 6 is a erspective detail view showing the interna partition plates of the box or safe. Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view of the pusher or follower for expelling the matches.
Corresponding parts in the several 'figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved match safe includes a box or casing 1, one side of which may be corrugated, as shown at 2, to provide a convenient surface for striking matches. The box or casing 1 is divided by a longitudinally disposed partition 3, into two compartments, the larger one of which 4 constitutes the match receptacle, while the smaller compartment 5 contains the operating mechanism for expelling the matches. The lower portion of the partition plate 8 is curved or extended laterally as shown at 6, to form one side of a hopper, the opposite side of which is formed by an auxiliary partition plate 7 disposed longitudinally within and suitably secured to one of the side walls of the box or casing 1. Slidably disposed in the lower end of the hopper which forms a part of the match compartment 4 is a follower consisting of an elonrated late 8 provided near its right end with Iatera y extending lugs 9%9 that are guided in slots 10 in the side walls of the hopper said follower is also provided near its front end with a laterally extending angular bracket 11 extending through a slot 12 in the lower edge of the artition plate 3; the rear extremity of the fo lower S is bent upward to form an upstanding lug or flange 13, adapted to engage the rear end of a match for the purpose of ejecting the same. The upstanding arm 15 of the angular bracket 11, which is disposed in the lower portion of the compartment 5 of the casing, is loosely connected with the lower end of a lever 16 which is pivotally supported within said compartment, and which is connected with a suitably supported operating spring 17, the tension of which is exerted to retain the follower S normally at the inward limit af its movement. A push rod 1S which extends through an aperture in the front wall of the box or casing is provided at its forward end with a push button 19, and the rear or inner end of said push rod is loosely connected with the upper end of the lever 16. The fulcrum 2O of the lever 16 is disposed near the upper end of the latter so that the lower end of said lever will have a relatively extensive movement when the lever is actuated, against the tension of the spring 17 by the push rod.
The rear end of the box or casing has an opening for which a hinged lid 21 is provided, said lid being equipped with a fastening device which may be m the nature of a spring catch 22 of simple construction.
The front end of the box has a discharge aperture 28 adjacent to which is secured a flap 24 of rubber or other suitable flexible material g said flap being provided with a narrow slot 25 through which a single match may be conveniently expelled.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The box may be ililled with matches through the aperture at its rear end, and by simply press ing the button at the forward end of the push rod 18 the lever 16 will be operated to actuate the Vfollower which will be pushed in a forward direction, thus causing the matches to be expelled one by one through the aperture 23 m the front end of the casing, the notched or slotted flap 24 being slightly displaced to admit of the passage of the match which, when partly expelled, is retained by contact with the flexible flap until it is rellO Vio
moved by the fingers of the operator. said flexible iiap also forms a closure which will prevent the matches from dropping out of the case unless ejected in the manner de= scribed.
This im roved device,- as will be seen, is very simp e in construction and capable of being manufactured at a moderate ex ense while its convenience and utility wil be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is In a single delivery match safe, a box or casing having longitudinally disposed partition plates therein, said plates cooperating to forma hopper, a follower disposed slidably between the said lates, said follower having an upstanding ug on the rear end thereof, laterally extending lugs on said follower adjacent the above mentioned lug,
The l said laterally extending lug engaging slots formed in the lower edges of the said plates adjacent one end thereof, a laterally extending angular bracket, arranged on the front end of the follower, a spring actuated lever secured to the angular bracket by means of a slot and pin connection, a push rod connected to the upper end of the spring actuated lever by means of a slot and pin connection, said rod extending through the front end of the casing, said spring actuated lever being pivotally supported in the compartment between one of the partition plates and the adjacent wall of the casing.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
