have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for lype-VVrit ing Machines, of which the following is a tnll, clear, and exact specification` 'This invention relates to improvements in attachments for typewriters and other similar machines' of that class of attachments adapted to produce a plurality of original copies and .now known usually as multigraphs.7 1
The invention in the present embodiment is shown applied to multigraph attaelnnents of Athe general character illustrated and claimed in'prior United States Patents No. y649,513 and Nef 649,514-, granted-.to me May 15, 1900, and in which attachments for the common forms'ot typewriters are shown having l'or their object the enabling of such machines to make multiple copies, each of lwhich copies is an original in thatit is produced by means of arihbonbrought 'forcibly intocontact with the surface of the paper by suitable type, fore made consists primarily of a supplemental inking-ribbon and suitable means for supporting and operating the same.
The supplemental ribbon is wound on drums or reels and is operated iby being wound on one oiz the drums or reels and dis-- charged from thc'other after which the operation is reversed by sluiting the supplemental ribbon in the opposite direction.
In devices ol this charar'fter, great dillculty has heretofore heen experienced inseeuring a proper and constant degree ol' tension on the supplemental ribbon. as just suggested, and when two copies areA desired the additional or supplemental ribbon is placed. between the two sheets of paper, and type acting throuigh the :first sheet and. through' the supplemental ribbon makes the impression on the second sheet, it being understood of course that the raised surface of the type makes a corresponding impression in the iirst sheet and the supplen'iental ribbon and thereby. is enabled to leave a similar mark upon the second. sheet, with which the raised portion of the ribbon con-- til-ets by reason ol the iressure of the type. .lf the supplemental ribbon be placed immediately between the two sheets it will be apparent that not only 'two impressions will be made as described but there will also be a third impression on the back of the lirst sheet, which is not only of no use, because it lis a reverse impression, but it also mars the appearance of the first sheet. To avoid this defect, the side of the ribbon next the back of the first sheet may be covered byprotecting material, either integral With .the ribbon, or, what is more preferable, a removable protesting strip, which may be of the same length as the supplemental ribbon 3, and be manipulated with it in themannershown and described in. my prior patent No. 469,514, to which reference has already been made'` rllhis protecting` strip is not illustrated herein, for the reason that it forms part of the present invention. lf three copies are desired, .a thn'd sheet 'ii/paper y(preferably thinner than the other two eots and in lieu ol' the protectimy strip just mentioned) is placed between the supplementrl ribbon and the lirst sheet, and in this manner the third sheet will receive an im- )re'ssion upon its back of a reverse character7 lout which may be read correctly when looking from the front or other side of the sheet. Thus it will be seen that when the mechanism for shifting the feed roll or platen is o erated the ratchet 29 and the sleeve 16 wil be correspondingly rotated. It will be ap arent that when the ribbon is being woun on to one of the drums 6 and 7 the other oi' the drums must rotate in the opposite direction in order to give oi a corresponding quantity of ribbon. To secure this result one of the reels or drums 6 and7 must at all times be left free to rotate independently of sleeve 16. This is accomplished by the construction already described for it will be seen that when one of the inwardly extending lugs or pins 2() and 21 is in contact with the correspond-4 ing depressions 20a and 21 in the drums 6 and 7 the other of such engaging pin or lug must be disengaged thus freeing its correspending reel or drum. From this"descrip tion it will be seen that the ratchet: 29 and the sleeve 16 rotate constantly in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig'. 2 which is also in theA direction of the constant rotation of the platen or feed roll. When the rod or shaft17 is in position shown in Fig. 3 the drum 6 will be locked in the manner described to the sleeve 16 and`will be rotated thereby winding theribbon 3u )on it, while at the same time the drum 7 will be feeeto revolve and the ribbon willbe taken from it. On the other hand when the ribbon is exhausted from drum 7 the direction of its movement is shifted-by the operator who disconnects the drum 6 and locks the drum 7 to the sleeve 16 all of which is accomplished by sluiting the rod 17 thus engaging the lug or pin 21v with its corresponding depression 21a in drum 7 and at the same time disconnecting lug 2() from its criirresponding-depression 20 in drum 6. ln this manner the supplemental ribbon may bc continuously operated as long as desired. This constant shifting process accomplishes a beneficial ref sult in the usc oi hiking-ribbons well known and understood by tliosc versed in the art. ln a ribbon oi this character, however, it is sometimes desirable that means be provided for reiplcnislring the same )Vith ink. By this con`- struction it Will be seen thattif the tension ot the ribbon asit leaves drum 7 has a tendency to cause the drum to rotate by reason of inertia after the movement of drum 6 stops, such movement will be `checked by reason of the fact that when drum 6 stops it positively stops the rotation of shaft 36 and the conical Y drum 44 which through cord 49, conical drum 45 and its elastic connection to shatt 41 will check the movement of shaft 41 and consequently the movement of drum 7 which is positively connected to' shaft 41 through pinions 39 and 40. When the supplemen tary ribbon 3 is entirely imwound from drum 7 and is Wound upon drum 6 the operator shifts the direction of movement .of the supplementary ribbon lby sliding the rod 17 longitudinally so as to engage lng tir-projection 21 With its corresponding depression 21a' in drum 7 thus causing the drum 7 to be rotated positively by the rotation ot the sleeve l5 and the ratchet 29.
