REINEQBUED COE-LNER F0251. BGELELE, QRATES, 650.
i No. 886,462.
Specification. of Letters Pat-ant.
Fatented May 5., 1908.
Application flied September 12, 1906. Serial No. 3351,8154.
To all whom it may cancer-n.
Be it known that I, HARRY M. Amos, 2. citizen of the United States, residing Lorain, in the county of Lorain and Ststeoi Ohio, have invented certain new sno uscinl Improvements in Reinforced Corners for Boxes, Crates, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andcxsct description of the invention, such as will on able otho s skilled in the art to which it sppert-sins to make and use the some, reference sing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to no. and useful improvements in reinforcing corners for boxes, grates, etc, and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature comprising a metallic plate which is bent in i adapted to engage three of the foccs of s. box or crate adjacent to the corner, and when securely fastened thereto, afford it simple and ellicient means for reinforcing the box or crate sndthoroughly bracing the some.
My invention comprises various details of construction and arra ngeinents of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accomponying drawings, in.which:='
Figure 1 is it blank of metal from which my reinforcing corner is made, showing an opening at the center which will come at Elie apex of the device when formed: F 1g. 3 is a. perspective view showin the device applied to a corner of s box. Fig. 3 1s Et SfiOtIOIASQ-l view through the box and reinforcing corner, and Fig.
4 is a detail View of a slightly modified form of my corner reinforcing device, showing two of the sides of the corner overlap )ing each other.
Ileference now being had to'the detsils of the drowin s by letter, A designates s. blsnk of metal which may be of any size or shape,
reierably square, snd in the form shown in lg. l of the drawings, an opening ll. is formed at the center of the blank, and when the device is formed into a' pyramid shops to engage the corner of a. box or crate-the blank pyramidal shape and is bent st'right angles along the lines inclicsted by B and C, While the blank 13 out orssvered along the lines indicated by letters C and C. One of the edges of the blank along the out (7 is bent to form a hook C adopted to engage a similar flange or hook C formed on the edge designated by letters C, the twoor hooks and being adopted to interlock to form a corner of pyramid shape, having three angled faces thereto, with the opening A" at the apex thereof. Apcrtures n are formed along the marginal edges of the blank, preferably with the bur edges of said apertures upon the inner face of sold corner piece, thereby sfiording a means for holding the device in place.
in Fig. i of the drawings, l have shown a slight modification of my corner device in which, instead cutting awsya. portion of the blank, I bend the blank along the lines B, B and F, while a. single slit G is formed in slineincnt with the bend B, and extending from the center to the corner, and
when the blank is bent along the lines indi csted, two of the faces of the blank overlap each other and registerin ertnres for the rocegtion of nails or other fastening means are formed in the faces which overlap and ndjacent to their outer edges, whereby the device may be further reinforced. if desired, the central aperture or opening may be dispensed with, making a ointcd apex, although, in order to orevsnt rnising the apex, it may be found preferable to form the blanks with the opening as shown and described. While Li have shown the edges of the reinforcing corner pieces out straight, it will be understood that they may be formed in irregular or fancy outlines, if desired.
By the provision of a reinforcing device for corners of boxes or crates as shown, it Will he observed that a simple and efficient means is afforded which will not only protect the corners of the box or crate from injnr but also reinforce snd brace the some age-inst rou h hsndling incident to shipping devices of t. is character.
What i claim is:-
A reinforcing device for the corners of boxes, crotcsflcto, comprising, in combination with a box, a triangular face cap having I In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 7 an a ertured apex through which a corner of signature in the presence of two witnesses.
the 0X is adapted to pass in order to form a HARRY M AMOS cushion means therefor, said ca having inte'rloeking flanges along one of t 1e corners of Witnesses:
the box to which the device is secured, as set A. B. Cmsr, forth. I J. D. SCHREOONGOST.
