Be it known that I, ROBERT D. TENNENT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Connellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Jamb Setters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a door jamb setter, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a novel device for accurately setting door ambs or similar frames in a building.
Heretofore considerable trouble has been experienced in properly setting door jambs, whereby when a door is hung, the door will not sag or bind, but will properly swing upon its hinges. This trouble is often due to the improper construction of a building, particularly the floor joist and the wall uprights or frames.
By the use of my device, I am enabled to accurately set a door jamb or similar frame and accomplish the same with a minimum amount of labor and time with respect to the old manner of setting door jambs.
The j amb setting device as constructed by me is of a portable nature, strong and durable and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. The device while being particularly designed to save the labor of persons skilled in the art of setting door jambs, also relieves the laborious task of door hangers or persons familiar with the hanging of a door.
The preferred embodiments of my invention, are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but these embodiments are necessarily susceptible to structural changes, particularly those permitted by the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, illustrating the same in connection with the door jamb, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the upper end of the device, illustrating an adjustable scale, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the scale, Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of the lower end of the device.
In the accompanying drawings, the reference numerals 1 designate the uprights or wall joist of the building, suitably braced as at 2. Between the uprights or wall joist 1 I have illustrated a door jamb, comprising side rails 3 and a head rail 4, and it is an object of my invention to set the door jamb, whereby the side rails 3 will be precisely perpendicular with respect to the floorline '5 of the building.
My device comprises two angle bars having flanges 6 and 7 formed at right angles to one another. These angle bars are approximately the same height as the inner height of the door jamb, whereby said bars can be clamped to the side rails 3 of the door jamb to insure perfect accuracy in the adjustment of the amb, when the bars are adjusted.
In connection with each door jamb I use two angle bars, and as these bars are identical in construction, I deem it only necessary to describe one of said bars.
In connection with each bar I use clampbolts 8, said bolts being used at the upper and lower ends of each angle bar. The bolts pass through the flanges 7 of the angle bars and are provided with heads 9 for engaging the side rail 3 of the door jamb, and with bifurcated extensions 10 for embracing a metallic screw 11. The metallic screws 11 carry wood screws 12 for engaging in the wall joist 1, and upon the screws 11 are located nuts 14 for holding the bifurcated extension 10 in a fixed position with relation to the metallic screw 11. The opposite end of the bolt 8 passes through a bearing or strap 15 carried by the flange 6 of the angle bar, the end of said bolt 8 being provided with a nut 10 having radially disposed openings 17 formed therein for the insertion of a suitable instrument em loyed for rotating said nut. As the bolt 8 ies in close proximity to the flange 6, I provide the flange 6 with an opening 18 to receive that portion of the nut 16, that would otherwise interfere with the flange 6.
As the bolts 8 are used at the upper and lower ends of an angle bar, said angle bar can be adjusted with relation to the wall joist 1, and in order to position the angle bars in a plane perpendicular to the floor line 5, I provide the flanges of said angle bars with openings .19 in which level lasses 20 of a conventional form are locate By these level glasses I am enabled to readily determine the angularity or inclination of the angle bars.
Now, in order to connect the door jamb to the angle bars of my device, I use bolts 21 in connection with each angle bar, said bolts door jamb, While the opposite ends of the bolts are provided with nuts 24, similar to p the nuts 16, previously described.

In the setting of the door jamb it is also necessary to properly position the same with relation to the floorline 5, should the same be out of horizontal plane or should the door jamb in itself be defective. I accomplish this by providing the angle bars at their upper ends with recesses 25 to receive graduated gage-bars or extensions 26 having bifurcated ends 27, held in engagement with the flanges 6 of the angle bars by bolts The gagebars or extensions 26 are adapted to engage the head rail 4 of the door jamb, while the lower ends of the angle bars are adjusted with relation to the floor line 5 by adjustably mounted supports 80. The supports 30 are slidably mounted in brackets 31 and 32 carried by the flange 6 of each angle bar, and
are adjusted by a nut 33 arranged between the brackets 32.
. In connection with the angle bars of the device, I use a spirit level 34, which is placed between the angle bars, the ends of said spirit levelresting in openings 35 formed in the flanges 7 of said bars.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have devised novel means for correctly positioning a door jamb, means for determining the vertical as well asthe horizontal plane of the different parts of the jamb, irrespective of the wall joist or floor line,.,.e i,ther of which may be employed for supporting the door jamb after it has been properly set.

Having now described my invention What I claim as new, is
1.. In a door jamb setter, the combination with wall joist, and a door jamb, of angle bars clamped to said door jamb, bolts adjustably carried by said angle bars, and adapted to clamp said jamb, said bolts having bifurcated'ends, screws for adjustably holding the bifurcated ends of the bolts in engagement with said wall joist, adjustable extensions carried by the upper ends of said angle bars for engaging said j amb, spirit levels carried by said angle bars, adjustable supports carried by the lower ends of said angle bars, and a' level supported between said angle bars, substantially as,and for the purpose set forth. In a door jamb setter, the combination with wall joist, and a door jamb, of vertically-disposed angle-bars engaging the door jamb, means for clamping the angle-bars "to the door jamb, and means for clam ing the door j amb to the wall joist, comprising bolts adjustably-mounted" on the angle-bars and provided with heads to engage the outer faces of the door j ambs andhavingbifurcated outer ends, screws engaging the bifurcated ends of said bolts and engaging in the wall joist, and means on said screws for securing said bifurcated ends of the bolts thereto.
