Description

No. 873,652. PATENTED DEC. 10, 1907. 0. H. BANKS. -Y
HAMMOCK SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 13,1967.
WITNESSES I INVENTOH CHARLES H. BANKS, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
HAMMOCK-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed June 13.1907- Serial No. 378.767.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OnARLEs H. BANKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Hammock-Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The invention relates to canvas hammocks such as are used in prisons. Its object is to provide a new and improved hammock sup port, arranged to permit convenient attachment to a prison bar of a grating, and to insure proper hang of the hammock and comfort to the user.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed outin the claims.
A practical embodiment of theinventionis represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan view of the improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a reduced perspective view of the improvement.
To the doubled-up end A of the body A of the hammock are secured by rivets B one,
two or more doubledup leaves C, each made U-shape when viewed in plan, and supporting in itsside bars C a pintle D engaged by an eye E of a hook E, adapted to be hooked onto a bar F of a grating or other suitable support, the hook E being free to swing on the pintle D and to slide thereon, so as to permit the hook to properly fit the prison bar especially one in a grating, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.
-In practice usually two supports as described are attached to the single body of a hammock, but only one such support or more than two may be employedif desired. In either case, however, the hook D is free to turn on the pintle and to slide laterally thereon, to permit proper adjustment of the support to suit existing conditions, with a view to insure the proper hanging of the hammock, and consequently comfort to the user thereof.
' The hammock support shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, is composed of comparatively few parts, not liable easily to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A hammock support comprising a U shaped leaf, a pintle in the side arms of the .leaf, and a hook J slidingly and turnably.
mounted on the said pintle between the said side arms of the leaf.
2. A hammock support comprising a double U-shaped leaf straddling the doubled-up end of a hammock, means for securing the leaf to the hammock end, a pintle carried by the side arms of the said leaf, and a hook for engagement with a prison bar and having an eye mounted to turn and to slide on the said pintle between the said side arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. BANKS.
