To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON WnsrnRnAnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carney, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scissors, shears and similar implements and has for its object to provide a pair of scissors the cutting blades of which may be adjusted at an angle with respect to the operating handles thereby to permit the scissors to be used for different purposes.
A further object of the invention is to. provide means for locking the cutting blades in adjusted position, and means for regulating the tension of said blades.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of scissors constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cutting blades in adjusted position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 41 of Fig. 1. of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the adjacent ends of one of the operating handles and cutting blades, respectively.
Similar numerals of reference indicate'corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved device forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a pair of operating handles 5 and 6 each having one end thereof provided with a finger loop 7 and its opposite end formed with a reduced circular enlargement 8 defining oppositely disposed shoulders 9 and 10 preferably curved to conform to the curvature of the enlargement 8, as shown.
Pivotally connected with the operating handles 5 and 6 are cutting blades 11 and 12 each having one end thereof provided with an enlargement 14 curved to conform to the shape of the enlargement 8 of the adjacent handle and having a slot or recess 15 formed therein for the reception of said enlargement whereby the blades are free to oscillate on the operating handles.
The enlargements 8 and 14 are pierced by a vertical opening 15 in which is seated a threaded bolt 16 constituting a pivot pin, one end of said bolt being provided with a flared head 17 and the opposite end with a nut 18 for engagement with the threaded end of the bolt, as shown.
The enlargement of each cutting blade is formed with Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 55 in each circular head 8 to assist in guiding the adjacent locking lip 22 to operative and inoperative position.-
Seated in' recesses 24 in each operating handle is a coiled spring 25 which bears against the locking member or slide 20 and serves to normally and yieldably hold the locking lip 22 in engagement with one of the looking recesses or slots 19, there being a screw or finger piece 26 secured to the locking member by means of which the slide may be moved to inoperative position against the tension of the spring 24 when it is desired to adjust the cutting blades at an angle with respect to the operating handle.
As a means for regulating the tension on the cutting blade there is provided a plate having one end thereof curved laterally to form a bearing disk or washer 27 provided with a depending spur 28 for engagement with the adjacent enlargement 14 while its opposite end is bent upwardly and thence laterally upon itself to form an over-hanging arm 29 the end of which is bifurcated for the reception of the pivot pin or bolt 16 and bears against the clamping nut 18 so as to hold the cutting blades in contact with each other and in engagement with the circular enlargement 8 of the operating handles.
Under ordinary conditions the cutting blades are arranged in alinement with the operating handles, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
When it is desired to arrange the cutting blades at an angle to the operating handles the locking members or slides 20 are adjusted longitudinally of the operating handles until the locking lips 22 of said members are disengaged from the locking recesses or slots 19 in the cutting blades after which the blades are adjusted laterally to the desired angle or inclination and the locking members or slides 20 released thus causing the lips 22 to enter the adjacent locking recesses or slots 19 and lock each cutting blade in engagement with its operating handle, as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. It will thus be seen that the cutting blades are locked in engagement with the operating handles but are free to oscillate one upon the other when the handles are manipulated so as to permit the scissors to be used for cutting cloth or other material in the usual manner.
In order to readjust the cutting blades it is merely necessary to retract the locking members against the tension of the coiled springs and move the cutting blades until the latter are in alinement with the operating handles when the locking members will engage the recesses in the enlargements 14 of the cutting blades and lock the blades in alinement with the handles in the manner before stated.
It will be here observed that the slides or locking members 20 are dovetailed in cross section, as indicated at 30 for engagement with correspondingly shaped longitudinal grooves formed in the operating handles while the locking lips 22 are formed separate from the slides 20 and secured thereto by means of the screws or finger pieces 26.
While the scissors are principally designed for cutting cloth or other fabric it is obvious that the same may be used for cutting or shearing metal, for pruning plants and flowers or wherever a device of this kind is found desirable.
From the foregoing description it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood by those skilled in the art and further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
1. An implement of the class described including operat ing handles, cutting blades pivotally connected with the op crating handles and provided with spacedlocking recesses, said blades being adjustable at an angle with respect to the handles and locking members carried by thehandles and adapted to engage the recesses for locking the cutting blades in adjusted position.
2. An implement of the class described including operating handles, cutting blades pivotally connected with the operating handles and adjustable at an angle thereto, a
pin forming a pivotal connection between the cutting blades and handles, and means independent of the pivot pin for positively locking the cutting blades in adjusted position.
' 3. An implement of the class described including operating handles, cutting blades pivotally connected with the handles and provided with spaced locking recesses, said blades being adjustable at an angle with respect to said handles, locking members slidably mounted on the handles for locking the cutting blades in adjusted position, and a tension device disposed at the pivotal juncture of the blades and handles.
4. An implement of the class described including operating handles, cutting blades pivotally connected with the handles and provided with locking recesses, and locking members slidably mounted on the handles and adapted to engage the recesses.
5. An implement of the class described including operating handles. cutting blades pivotally connected with the operating handles and adjustable at an angle thereto, said cutting blades being pivoted with a plurality of locking recesses. and locking members carried by the operating handles and adapted to engage the recesses in the cutting blades for locking the latter in adjusted position.
6. An implement of the class described including operating handles, cutting blades pivotally connected with the opcrating handles and adjustable at an angle thereto, said cutting blades being provided with spaced locking recesses, spring actuated locking members slidably mounted on the handles and adapted to engage the locking recesses, a pin forming a connection between the handles and cutting blades, respectively. and a tension device engaging the pin.
7. An implement of the class described including operating handles provided with lateral enlargements having alined recesses formed therein, cutting blades pivotally mounted for lateral movement on the enlargements and provided with terminal slots for the reception of said enlargements, said cutting blades being adjustable at an angle to the operating handles, a pivot pin extending through the openings in the enlargements and engaging the cutting blades, and means for locking the cutting blades in adjusted position.
8. An implement of the class described including operat' ing handles each provided With a reduced extension defining oppositely disposed stop-shoulders, cutting, blades pivotally connected with the operating handles and having recesses formed in their pivoted ends for the reception of the reduced extensions, said cutting blades being provided with spaced locking recesses and adjustable at an angle to the operating handles, and means carried by the operating handles and adapted to engage the recesses for locking the cutting blades in adjusted position.
9. An implement of the class described including operating handles each provided with a circular enlargement defining oppositely disposed curved shoulders, cutting blades pivotally connected with the operating handles and having slots formed in the pivoted ends thereof for the reception of the circular extensions, said cutting blades being adjustable at an angle to the operating handles and provided with spaced locking recesses, and spring actuated locking members slidably mounted on the handles and adapted to engage the recesses in the cutting blades for locking the latter in adjusted position.
10. An implement of the class described including operating handles having longitudinal grooves formed therein and provided with recesses communicating with said grooves, cutting blades pivotally connected with the operating handles and adjustable laterally at an angle to said operating handles, said-cutting blades being provided with spaced locking recesses, locking members slidably mounted in the grooves in the operating handles and provided with terminal locking lips adapted to engage the recesses in the cutting blades for locking the latter in adjusted position, and springs seated in the recesses in the operating handles and bearing against the locking members for normally and yieldably supporting the latter in operative position.
11. An implement of the class described including operating handles having longitudinal grooves formed therein the walls of which are dovetailed, cutting blades plvotally connected with the handles and adjustable laterally at an angle thereto, said cutting blades being provided with spaced locking recesses, a pivot pin piercing the cutting blades and operating handles and provided with a terminal nut, a plate secured to one of the cutting blades and provided with an overhanging spring arm embracing the pin and bearing against the nut, and dove-tailed locking members slidably mounted in the grooves in the operating handles and provided with terminal lips adapted to engage the adjacent locking recesses in the cutting blades for locking the latter in adjusted position.
