Description

WILLIAM K. ALOHIKEA, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SANITARY STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 12,1906. Serial No. 343,104.
No. 866,25 1. Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. ALOHIKEA, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Stools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved sanitary stool which embodies a combination douche pan and bag therefor, the combination pan and bag being .readily removable therefrom and as readily secured in operative relation to the seat of the stool proper, and the latter being so arranged that it may be conveniently set up in position for use or folded so that i it may be readily carried from place to place or stored away without occupying much space.
With this and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain constructions and arrangements of the parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sanitary stool. Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, longitudinal and cross sectional views thereof. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the stool collapsed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The stool itself embodies a base 1 and a seat 2, which is preferably cushioned. The seat 2 is connected to the base 1 by four jointed legs 3, each of which is hinged intermediate of its ends so that the two sections thereof may fold inwardly upon each other, and spring hinges 4 are employed at the joints of the legs as well as at the points of connection between the' legs and the base and seat respectively. The springs of these hinges exert a tension to straighten out the legs at their joints and thereby automatically elevate the seat 2 to its operative plane, and for the purpose of securely holding the frame steady or the jointed legs, the base and the seat in an extended and operative position, I have provided two struts 5 which are connected by spring hinges to supporting plates 6 at each side of the seat 2. The plates 6 project downwardly from the seat 2 and the springs of their hinges exert a tension to normally brace the ends of the plates against the sides of the legs 3 when the latter are in extended position, while the spring hinges between the supporting plates 6 and the struts 5 exert a tension to hold the struts between the front and back legs with the legs abutting against the ends of the struts so as to prevent inner folding of the legs at their of the legs in elevated.
The seat 2 is which preferably the seat, and underneath the seat and at each side 01" the opening are ledges 9, constituting together a guideway and preferably consisting upwardly and inwardly at their ends and secured to the lower surface of the seat between the upper end of the legs, as indicated at 10 in the drawings.
'1]. designates a combination douche pan and bag therefor.
12 designates the rim of the pan, which is preferably of. metal covered with rubber, and 13 designates the pan itself which is also preferably of rubber and which is secured within the margin of the rim l2 and sup ported thereby in any desired manner. The pan 13 is adapted to be closed by stopper 14 when the pan is not in use and said stopper may be secured to one end of a chain 15 attached to the rim so as to be always at hand.
16 designates the bag, the mouth of which is secured to the under surface of the rim 12 and which is adapted to receive the waste water of the douche. The bag 16 is provided, as shown, with an opening 17 through which the water may be poured when emptying.
In practical use, the stool itself being held as before described with the seat in an elevated position, the rim 12 of the combination pan and bag is slid inwardly underneath the seat in the guide-way and is supported upon the ledges 9 so as to the pan and within the framework, of which the seat forms the top. After the combination pan and bag have been used for the well-known hygienic ,purposes for which devices of this character are devised the combination pan and bag may be readily withdrawn by sliding the rim outwardly, and the bag may be then emptied.
When the device is not in use the seat may be readily folded down upon the base with the jointed legs folded inwardly, the bag and pan may be received between the base and the seat so as to be held therein, and the supporting plates 6 with the struts 5 may assume a position with the struts underneath the base at the side edges thereof. In this manner the entire device may be folded up into a small compass and conveniently stowed away or carried from place to place.
From the foregoing description and in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and complete device of this character which may be readily carried in ones trunk or hand-bag in folded condition without occupying much space and which may be set up with its parts in operative relation to each other whenever necessary, thus providing a useful toilet accessory, particularly useful for vaginal and other douches.
joints and to secure the maintenance straight relation so as to support the seat of metallic strips bent sustain the bag underneath their joints, and hinged at their ends to the base and seat respectively, the springs of said hinges tending to force the legs out straight so as to elevate the seat with respect to the base, hinged plates secured to the side edges of the seat, and struts having a spring hinge connection with the lower edges of the said plates and adapted to extend between and in contact with the legs, to hold the latter in straight relation to the seat and back.
4. In a sanitary device of the character described, the combination of a seat provided with an opening extending therethrough and with ledges underneath and on each side of said opening, a douche pan provided with a rim adapted to be supported on said ledges, and a bag suspended from said pan.
5. In a sanitary device of the character described, the combination of a seat provided with an opening extending therethrough,
From the drawing it will be seen that the combination pan and bag are made separately. The pan is provided with a rim which fits on the rim of the rubber bag and the pan has a metal rim inclosed in rubber like the bag. By means of this construction the one can be used Without the other.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A sanitary device of the character described, comprisin; a base; a seat provided with an opening therein, jointed legs hinged to the seat and base, and struts suspended from the side edges of the seat and adapted to abut against the legs whereby to hold them in straight relation to the seat and base, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A sanitary device of the character described, compris ing a base, a seat provided with an opening extending therethrough, jointed legs hinged to the seat and base, supporting plates hinged to the side edges of the seat and adapted to extend downwardly therefrom, and struts hinged to the lower edges of said plates and adapted to extend inwardly between the legs to hold the same in straight relation to the seat and base.
3. A sanitary device of the character described, comprising a base, a seat provided with an opening extending therethrongh, jointed legs provided with spring hinges at a douche pan provided with a rim, a bag suspended from said rim and provided with a discharge opening, and means for suspending the pan and bag underneath the opening in the seat.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
