Description

PATENT-ED SEPT. 17, 1907-.
w. H. STOUT. GYLINDRIGAL BOX. APPLICATION FILED MAY 17, 1906.
THE NORRIS PETERS cm, wxsumamu, a. c.
WILLIAM HENRY STOUT, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
CYLINDRIGAL BOX- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1'7, 1907.
Application filed May l7,1906. Serial No. 317,258.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRY SroU'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylindrical Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a iull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cylindrical knock-down boxes especially designed for the shipment of cheese.
The objects of the invention are first, to provide such box having a feature of air-tightness which adapts itfor the shipment of cheese and the like. Secondly, to provide a box which may be shipped with the parts disunitcd so that the greatest amount of space is utilized in the shipment, such box being easily united or put together by unskilled labor and without the use of machinery. Thirdly, to provide a box having the above desirable features, and in addition thereto the feature of inexpensiveness.
To the foregoing ends my contains the structural features and inafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings hereto-annexed-Figure 1, is a plan view of a continuous blank or sheet of veneering which forms the cylindrical wall of the box. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the completed box with a portion of the improved cylindrical box the utility as herecover broken away. Fig. 3, is a sectional elevation of the box with united parts.
In a detail description of the invention, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
The box is of cylindrical form, the surrounding wall thereof being constructed from a continuous oblong sheet 1 of veneering of suitable thickness to meet the requirements of a cheese box. This blank or sheet 1 is preferably constructed of wood but any suitable material other than wood may be utilized. In the opposite longitudinal edges of said blank there is provided a multiplicity of projections or tongues 2 which are provided by cutting a similar number of intervening notches 3 throughout the length of the blank. The extreme ends of said blank at the longitudinal edges terminate in half tongues 2 These tongues 2 and 2 enter a similar number of slots 5 that are provided around the circumferential edges of the disks from which the cover 4 and the bottom 8 of the box are formed, said top and l l l bottom 4: and 8 being of circular form and are of uniform diameters. The intervening cuts or notches 3 provide a series of shoulders 7 which abut with the shoulders 6 on the inner sides of the top and bottom of the box, and thus said top and bottom are suitably spaced and held with the tongues 2 projecting through the slots 5 and lying flush with the outer sides of said top and bottom 4 and 8. Surrounding and secured to the cover 4 and bottom 8 are hoops 9 which form outer inclosures of the slots 5, and these hoops extend down around the exterior wall of the box a suitable distance below the shoulders '7 when placed in position.
In assembling the parts, to-witthe blank 1 and the top and bottom, the said blank is bent by hand while dry, .into a cylindrical form with the edges 1 abutting; the two extreme half tongues 2 form a tongue of similar dimensions to the tongues 2,
and are placed in a slot 5 in the bottom 8; the hoop 9 on said bottom holding the cylinder from spreading. The tongue formed by the two half tongues 2 act as guides for the insertion of the other tongues 2 on that edge of the blank into the remaining slots 5 in said bottom. The box is then formed and is ready to receive the contents to be packed for shipment. The cover 4 is then placed in position by alining the slots 5 therein with the tongues 2 on the upper end of the cylinder and pressing said cover down to permit of said tongues en tering said slots. The box is then ready for securing the top and bottom by a suitable number of nails 10. The hoops 9 are united to the disks forming the top and bottom when the box is ready for shipment in its knockdown form so that there are but three parts to said box.
I claim:
A collapsible cheese box having a cylindrical body formed of veneering, the top and bottom ends of which are provided with alternate tongues and recesses, a circular top and bottom the circumferential edges of which are provided with alternate tongues and recesses to receive and interlock with the tongues and recesses in the ends of the body and to thus form joints consisting of uniform circles of interlocking tongues between said body and said top and bottom, and a band around the top and bottom securely locking the connections between the top and bottom and the ends of the box, said bands extending inwardly around the body of the box from the points of connection between said body and the top and bottom, and whereby the ends of saidbox are reinforced by said bands in addition to said top and bottom'being maintained inrigid interlocking connection with the body of the box.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, 'in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY STOUT.
