DUNGANJ. FISHER, OF OVANDO, MONTAN.
BOX-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
Application tiled February 6,1906, Serial No. 299,838. Renewed March 23, 1907. Serial 110.364,070-
To all 'whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, DUNCAN J, FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ovando, in the county of Powell and State oi Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BOX-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will-enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fasteners and more particularly to that class adapted to be used in connection with cases for holding bottled beverages and its object is to provide a device of this character which is compact, durable and which will securely lock the lid in position-upon the case so that the case can be transported' from place to place without being accidentally opened.`
The invention consists of a fastening device for the cover which can be quickly and securely fastened in place by means requiring the use of a special tool in unfastening the cover. I
The invention also consists of the further novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter made clearly apparent and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred forms of my invention.
In said drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case vconstructed in accordance with my invention and having its cover secured thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the case. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion oi the top plate of the cover. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the two portions of one oi the hinges separated. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the securing bolt. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the wrench used for unlocking the case.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a case of any suitable proportions and having partitions '2 therein for forming cells 3 into which bottles are adapted to be placed. A retaining device in the form of a plate 4 having a screw threaded passage 5 therein is se cured 'to the rear surface of the front wall of the case and the opening 5 therein registers with similar openings formed within the front wall and within a face plate 6 secured to the case. Extending over this face plate is a strip 7 having an enlarged opening 8 therein. Straps 9 are fastened to the rear wall of the case and project a short distance upward therefrom, said projecting portions having openings 10 therein adapted to receive hooks 1l formed at the ends of a forked plate 12 which is fastened on top oi the cover 13 of the case. This top plate has an integral tongue 14 extending downward from the front edge of the cover 13 and said tongue is provided with an opening 15 which is adapted to register with the openings in the face plate 6 and retaining plate 4. In using this case, a desired number of bottles are placed within the cells 3 after which the constituting a wrench, such as shown in Fig. 6.
strip has an opening 22 therein whereby the wrench can ing the same from place to place.
cover 13 is held in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the hooks 11 thereon can be readily inserted into the openings 10. The cover is then swung downward and the depending tongue 14 will assume a position between face plate 6 and strap 7. A locking bolt 16 is then inserted into the opening 8 and through the openings in the faceplate and retaining plate 4 and said bolt is then turned until its head 17 becomes seated within the opening 8. The bolt is shouldered as shown at 18 so as to prevent its rotation after the head 17 has been seated in the opening 8. Notches 19 are formed at diametrically opposite points within the periphery of head 17 and are adapted to be engaged by forked eX- tensions 20 which extend at right angles from a strip 21 This be nailed or otherwise secured to the case in transport- The bolt 16 is preferably provided with an opening 23 near the head thereof for the reception of a wire 24, the ends of which are adapted to be fastened by a seal 25. This wire is adapted to be extended through opening 23 and around strip 7 and'when in such position with its ends sealed, the wire will prevent the case from being opened Without detection.
It will be noticed that the case is suitably reinforced by means oi metallic straps 36 which extend around the ends of thecase and are permanently fastened thereto in any preferred manner.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a case having a retaining plate i secured therein and provided with a threaded passage, and straps having openings; of a cover upon the case, a bifurcated top plate having hooks on its bifurcated ends to engage said openings in the straps and a locking bolt extending through the top plate and into engagement with the retaining plate. i
2. The combination with a case having a retaining plate therein provided with a threaded passage and straps on said case having openings therein; of a' cover, a bifurcated top plate secured upon the cover, means upon the bifurcated ends of the top plate for engaging the openings in said straps, a tongue upon said plate and overlapping the case, and a locking device extending through the tongue and into engagement with the retaining plate..
3. The combination with a case having a retaining plate therein provided with a threaded passage; of a cover, a hifurcated top plate secured upon the cover, means upon the case for engaging the bifurcated top plate, a tongue upon said plate and overlapping the case, a locking device extending through the tongue and into engagement secured thereto; of a cover, a top plate secured thereto and having hooks adapted to engage the straps, a tongue integral with the top plate, a bracket upon the case, a locking screw extending through the tongue and bracket and into engagement with the case, the head of said screw being surrounded by the bracket.
G. The combination with a case having 'apertured straps secured thereto of a cover, a top plate secured thereto and having hooks adapted to engage the straps, a tongue integral with the top plate, a bracket upon the case, and a locking screw extending through the tongue and bracket and into engagement with the case, the head of said screw being surrounded by the bracket, said screw having a sealreceiving aperture normally disposed between the bracket and tongue.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
,f DUNCAN J. FISHE.
