. JOHN L. MASON, on NEW vonk, N'. Y.
IMPROVED FRUIT-JAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,090, (lated January 19, 1869.
lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. MASON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Preserve-Jars; and I do herebyv declare that the following is tion thereof, reference being had to the accomy panyiu g drawings, making apart of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the improved jar with its` cover secured in place. Fig. 2 shows the jar without its cover, but with a gasket or packing-band applied around its rib or flange. Fig. 3 is an enlarged diametrical section through the .upper portion of the improved jar, its cover, gasket or packing-band, and band-'fastening. v f `'Similar lettrs of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
`This invention relates to a new and int,
proved Inode of hermetieally sealing covers upon jars Or other vessels which are chiefly designed for preserving fruits, chemicals, and other substances which are decomposed or otherwise injured by exposure to the air.
My invention consists in providing for the use of. an elastic india-rubber band for confining a cover in place upon the mouth of a jar or other vesselwhen such jar or vessel and cover are adapted for receiving a packingring, which will afford a tightly-sealed joint without being exposed to the contents of such jar or vessel, as will be hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled in the art tp understand my invention, I will describe ,its coustruction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A representsa jar, and B its cover, which I prefer to make o1 glass or other vitreous substances.
Nea-r the upper end or mouth of the jar A aA wide bead or flange, a, is formed, which encircles the jar and presents a flat upper surface for receiving upon it the lower flanged edge e of the rim d of cover B, as shown in Fig. 3. Rising from this bead or fiange a is an annular-beveled rib or ilang'e, b, which surrounds the mouth of the jar A, and is tapered upwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, for the purpose of receiving upon it a packing, c, made of india-rubber or other suitable material.
B is the cover of the jar, which is cupshaped, with a flaring run, d, having an external annular iiange or bead, e, formed on its ring, c.
a full, clear, and exact descrip x The diameter of the flange o'r bead e exter- This cover B is slightly larger in I diameter internally than the diameter of the tapering rib or flange b, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to receive between it' and the external surface of the saidv rib or iange a packingnally is equal, or nearly so, to the diameter of i pressed in its place fined thereon by means of an elastic india rubber band, g,
on, als shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The band y, when thus applied, not only serves to confine the cover-B down tightly upon the gasket or packing e, but it also serves as auxiliary to the said sealin g the joint.
The top of the cover B may be made at, or
with a raised annular head, to serve as afoot when the cover isinserted. The bottom of this cover has an annular groove, t' formed in it for receiving the upper edge ofJ the rib or ange b and forming a depression or stopple, f, asrshown in Fig. 3.
By this invention I dispense with the use of. screwfastenin'gs, metallic clamps, and other similar fastenings which have been hereto fore used for holdngcovers on preserve-jars,
and employ in their stead a simple band oi indiarubber stretched over the parts e and a, which will keep the cover B down snuglyupon the packing c, and alsotclose tightly the joint` between e and a. l)
I am aware that stopples or covers differing from 'the flanged cover B have been confined Y upon vessels by a band of elastic rubber, and therefore I do not .feature alone.
claim as my invention the` I am also aware therefore I do not claim these elements when separately considered.
What I claim as new, and dsire to .secure by Letters Patent, isj A jar, A, constructed with an annular bead,
a, and upwardlytap'ering gasket-receiving rib or flange b, in combination with the anged cover B d e, packing c, and an elastic bandfastening, g, applied substantiallyas described.

tile flange b on the jar, and when the cover BA l upon the'jar it isconof suitable width to embrace' I the two annular projections a and e when y stretched over and allowed to contract there' packing or -herm`tically x that a cover made with an external flange upon its rim is not new; and y
