Description

C- MARAY, Galvanic Plates for Medical Use.
Patented Jan. 19, 1869.
jive/e W5 N- PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHBR. WASHINGTON, D G.
Magg u WNW CHARLES MARAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 86,088, dated Janua/ry 19, 1869, antedated J (mun/r3 11, 1869.
G-ALVANIC PLATE FOR REMEDIAL PURPOSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Unnnnns ll/IARAY, of N ew York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Galvanic Plates for Medical Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a transverse section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Figure 3 is an inside view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a combination of copper andzinc elements, with intervening sheets of cloth, flannel, or other absorbent material, which 'are saturated with a saline solution, from a cistern fastened to the upper edges of said absorbent material, said elements being secured in a bag of cloth, or other suitar ble material, by means of screws or studs, with broad flanges or heads, in such a manner that, by bringing said heads or flanges in contact with the aiflicted part or parts of the body, such parts will be exposed to a powerful galvanic action, and that an apparatus is obtained which enables the patient to apply the galvanic current to the exact spot or spots where it is required, while, at the same time, the body is protected by the bag against injurious draught-s of air.
A represents my galvanic apparatus, which is composed of a series of copper elements, a, which alternate with zinc elements I).
Between the copper and zinc-elements, I introduce sheets 0, of cloth, felt, or other absorbent and non-conducting material, the upper edges of which connect with a cistern, (I, which is intended to be filled with a solution of common salt, or other suitable material, capable of generating galvanic action in the copper and zinc elements, said sheets being smaller than the zinc and copper elements, so that portions of said elements are in direct contact with each other.
This galvanic apparatus is introduced into a bag, B, of cloth, or other suitable material, and it is secured therein by one or more buttons, 0, the shanks of which extend through the zinc and copper plates, and are provided with screw-threads and nuts, as shown in fig. 3, so that the same can be easily and conveniently fastened in the desired position.
Said buttons are the conductors of the galvanic cur-' of loose cotton or other material, may be introduced into said bag, to protect the body against the influence of cold draughts of air.
In order to use my apparatus, I provide the bag B with a body-strap, or with suitable suspenders, and adjust it on the human body in such a position that the heads of the buttons G will bear against the afl'licted parts.
.I then introduce a small quantity of a solution of common salt in water, or of any other liquid capable of generating galvanic action, into the cistern d, and as this liquid is absorbed by the sheets 0, a galvanic current is created, which is brought in direct contact with the afl'licted parts of the body by the conductors O, and, at the same time, the bag B protects the body against draughts of air.
By these means, a galvanic appan tus is obtained, which can be used with great advantage and very good effect for curingrheumatio or other similar affections, and which can be applied to any part of the human body without trouble.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is-
The galvanic apparatus A, composed of zinc elements and copper elements, with interposed absorbent sheets 1;, connected to the cistern d, in combination with the bagB and conductor or conductors C, which secure the galv'amc apparatus to said bag, substantially as herein shown and described.
CHARLES MARAY.
