BEDSTEAD-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

, whereby the side rails of the bedstead can be readily attached and detached to the head and foot posts of the bedstead, and furthermore prevent the turning or wabbling of the side rails when they are connected to the head and foot posts through the medium of the lock.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a bedstead lock which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, readily set up and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be under stood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the elements of the lock, dis-assembled and showing one element fixed to one of the bed posts and the other to one end of a side rail; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the elements of the lock connected together, thereby attaching the side rail to the bed post, and, Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the elements of the look when connected together.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes a bed post to which is fixedly secured a casting 2 which forms the stationary element of the lock and having a flat bearing face in which is formed a pair of vertical grooves 4, one arranged near each side of the bearing face 3. The casting 2, intermediate the ends thereof is provided with a circular opening 5 which extends entirel 5 a narrow contracted passage 6 is formed and which extends from the bearing face 3 to, and terminates in the opening 5. The pas sage 6 is not as great in height as the height of the casting 2, thereby forming the bottom wall 7 therefor.
The portions 5 of the wall of the opening 5, such portions being arranged in close proximity to the point of communication between the contracted passage 6 and the opening5,
are inclined downwardly and inwardly so as to provide means for drawing the removable element of the lock in close contact with the stationary element of the look as the removable element is forced downwardly in the stationary element or in other words, the more weight placed upon the removable element, owing to the inclined portions 5 the tighter the joint will be between the removable and stationary elements of the lock.
The reference character 8 denotes a casting which is fixed to one end of the side rail 9 and is termed the removable element of the lock. The casting 8 is of tapering formation so as to provide an enlarged bearing face, 10 which is dished out as at 11, so as to maintain a proper bearing relation between the marginal portions of said face with respect to the bearing face 3 of the casting 2. The casth1g8 is provided with two pairs of dowels 12, the dowels of each pair being arranged in verticalalinement with respect to each other and are adapted to engage in the grooves 4. Arranged centrally of the face 10 of the casting 8 is a coupling pin consisting of a shank 13 and a head 14. The shank 14 is adapted to be positioned in the passage or channel 6 and the head 14 in the opening 5.
The grooves 4 act as a means for guiding the casting 8 when it is to be coupled to the casting 2 so that the shank 13 of the-coupling pin will readily enter the channel or passage 6. The dowels 12, in connection with the grooves 4, prevent lateral play of the casting 8 when it is coupled to the casting 2. The providing of the marginal bearing surfaces on the face 10 forms a firm bearing between the two castings and prevents the rocking of the casting 8 upon the casting 2 when they are coupled together. This is evident owing to the dishing out of the face 10; otherwise if the opposing faces of the castings were flat throughout'when the castings are connected together such construction would have a tendency to cause a rocking of one with retherethrough and at one side of the opening 1 spect to the other. This objection, however,
is overcome by dishing out the face of the casting 8 so that a firm bearing will be had between the two castings. The removable element can be reversed so that provision is made for supporting slats. This is evident owing to the angular formation of the side rail 9. When the two elements are connected together the head 14 is adapted to engage the inclined portions 5 so that when weight is applied to the removable element the inclined portions 5 in connection with the head 14, will draw the removable element in snug contact with the stationary element.
What I claim is 1. A bedstead lock comprising a casting having a key-hole-shaped opening and a flat bearing face, and a casting having its bearing face dished out so as to provide a smooth marginal portion extending entirely around said face and said latter casting furthermore provided with a headed coupling pin adapted to engage in the key-hole-shaped opening,
' thereby connecting the castings together.
2. A bedstead lock comprising a casting having a flat bearing face and provided with a pair of grooves, said casting further having a key-hole-shaped opening in the top thereof, a casting having its bearing face dished out and further having dowels adapted to engage in said grooves, and further provided with a headed coupling pin adapted to engage in said key-hole-shaped opening.
3. A bedstead lock comprising two castings each formed with a bearing face, one of said bearing faces dished out to form marginal bearing portions, combined with means carried by one of said castings and adapted to engage in the other casting for detachably connecting the castings together.
4 A bedstead lock comprising two castings each formed with a bearing surface, one of said surfaces provided with a pair of grooves and the other of said surfaces dished out to form marginal portions, means carried by one of the castings and adapted to engage in said grooves to prevent lateral play of said casting, and means carried by one of the castings and adapted to engage in the other casting for detachably connecting the castings together.
