Description

. No. 852,748. PATENTED MAY 7. 1907( J. TRUE.
BARREL CLEANER FOR BREBCH LOADING FIREARMS APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 26, 1906.
Z True rm: NaRRIs PETERS co., WASHINGTON u c JACOB TRUE, OF OASTILE, NEW YORK.
BARREL-CLEANER FOR BREECH-LOADING FIREARMS;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed September 26,1906. Serial No. 336,348.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AOOB TRUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castile, in. the county of lVyoming and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Cleaners for Breech- Loading Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of cleaning device for use in cleaning the barrels of breech-loading guns and revolvers, and the invention consists essentially of an improved cleaner for this purpose, which may be wrapped into a very small compass and be conveniently carried in ones pocket, where it will at all times be in readiness for use Without occupying much space and Without requiring an especially provided receptacle for its trans portation from place to place, while the gun or revolver is in use.
The invention also consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved barrel cleaning device for firearms; and, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a weight which forms one of the elements of the cleaner.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved barrel -cleaner attachment for guns or revolvers comprises a flexible body portion 1 to one end of which a weight 2- is secured, said weight being preferably at tached to one end of the flexible body portion by being provided with. an aperture 3 at one end to which the body portion 1 is directly connected by a slip knot 4.
It is to be particularly noted that the strands 5 of the flexible body portion 1, which in the present instance, is shown as being composed of cord, are spirally entwined throughout their length and are connected together at one end by a knot 8, as shown. By untwisting this end of the flexible body portion 1 to the required extent, a
may be formed, the members of this loop tending to contract upon themselves and close up the loop, owing to the spiral winding or twisting of the two strands with respect to each other. While two strands are shown, it is obvious that the invention is not limited to this number, as three or more may be employed to obtain substantially the same effect.
WVithin the loop 9, a cloth 10 or a sponge, or similar swabbing device may be inserted, such device being held in the loop by the mere automatic contraction of the strands that produce the loop, without the necessity of any other or independent securing means.
In the practical operation of the device, the weight 2 is inserted into the barrel of the gun or revolver from either end and is allowed to slide by gravity through the barrel, drawing the flexible body portion 1 after it and also the swab, such as a cloth 10, or a sponge, or the like. It is obvious that in this manner the interior of the gun barrel may be effectually cleaned, and if desired, it may first be swabbed out with a wet sponge held in the loop 9 and subsequently dried out by means of the cloth 10. When not in use, the entire device may be wrapped up into a small compass by winding up the flexible body portion upon ones hand, or in any other manner, and the entire device may be stored away in ones pocket or about the person, where it may always be ready for use. It is to be understood that while I have shown in the present instance the flexible body portion, as composed of strands of textile material, such as twine, such strands may be composed of wire or other material possessing sufficient resiliency and torsional elasticity to accomplish the desired result.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the weight 2 is of a peculiar and advantageous construction, in that it consists of a body portion 11 which is tubular and cylindrical and is filled by the shank 12 formed integral with the head portion 13 in which the aper ture 3 is formed. For the weight, I may use pewter, solder, zinc, brass, copper, or any other metal that is not calculated to scratch or mar the barrel of the gun.
Having thus described the invention, what spring loop 9 is claimed as new is:
As a new article of manufacture, the herein described cleaner for the barrels of guns or revolvers, comprising a flexible body portion, adapted to hold a swab at one end, and
